As someone who spends a great deal of time every year sitting in H65 in the stalls or A60 in the circle, in the RST, [yes, probably a Bardolater], I agree wholeheartedly with what you say. I bow to your superior knowledge Gwen and as a mere pleb I'm not a theatre goer, but I still admire and respect the Bard's wit - rightly or wrongly! Live long and prosper - is that one of his too!! Star Trek isn't it????? One of my favourite bits, 'cos it's so apt is: "I wasted time, now doth time waste me". And two comforting ones.... When I'm having a bad day: "The time and the hour runs through the roughest day". And when someone has done me, or mine, a bad turn: "The whirligig of time brings in his revenges". BTW... what's all that a few posts up about education breeding liars???? I am perplexed. OOPS, sorry, posts crossed. I type very slowly.

Sorry, couldn't locate where I said it? If for one without an education the past is maybe called folk lore or tradition what is it called with an education? Spin? Manipulation? Exploitation? Media frenzy / hype? Chance to make money - or gain power over others? And is there a difference at the end of the day?

Gwendolyn
Wasn't referring to you Tracker, but as someone else has pointed out, to Will. But when I was composing my reply to you I couldn't recall the name of the poster who made that puzzling assertion.

Archiesgrandad
When confronted by those who would seek to impress us with their intellectual achievements I recall a cartoon in Punch magazine in the '70s. It depicted two tramps settling down for the night on a park bench. One was obviously trying to wrap himself up in a copy of the Times, and the other in the Daily Mirror. The 'Mirror man, seeing that his Times companion had much many more and bigger sheets of paper with which to protect himself from the cold, asked " If you're so clever, why aren't you rich? Tracker
Crikey AGD, you had newspaper - such luxury? Newspaper were reserved for chips back in my day but if you were lucky you could find some used newspaper and recycle it (long before recycle were a fashion accessory) and best of all t'fat on t'paper kept t'rain off yer chilly bits! Will86
Chips!! Our luxury was bread and dripping.
Archiesgrandad
We didn't have dripping very often because we couldn't afford the beef joints. I have nasty memories of bread and lard, with a sprinkle of sugar to make it a bit more acceptable for the children. AGD
Geeco
We were tamed by the Shrew at school with vegemite sandwiches. Ok if you were in need of a vitamin B fix, but not too tasty after they had been sitting in the sun for a couple of hours. Sugar coated lard sounds delicious by comparison! Archiesgrandad
I can see that we are moving downhill fast. Any time now we will have the one about when it was cold my Dad used to suck a Fishermans Friend and breathe on us to keep us warm. Soon after that it will be the one about being so poor that on Christmas Eve my Mum would tear a hole in my trouser pocket so that I had something to play with on Christmas Day. Those were the days.
