The Bastei - Germany

Recommended Posts

We are planning a trip to the eastern side of Germany, via the Baltic coast and then south following the Polish border. One place we would like to visit is the Bastei (south of Dresden), but our guides do not show many night time stopping places, so can any forum members help with some suggestion please?

The rock formations around the Bastei and immediate area are fascinating.

The campsite at Königstein (where we stayed) is convenient for visiting, as it is pretty close, and also has access to the train and river services which allow you to get there using public transport.

Perfectly adequate site, if sometimes slightly busy.

The train service is part of the Dresden suburban network, and a (cheapish) all-day ticket allows easy visiting of the city - with trams etc. included (and a few other attractive locations up and down the Elbe valley).

There was (and I think still is) a Stellplatz between Strand and Rathen (ferry to the Bastei) at Bauernhof Steiner which is well situated on the minor road by the river - but we used the campsite for ease of access to public transport and other facilities.

Edited to add:

You can see 4 vans on the Stellplatz on this Google satellite view:

the stellplatz certainly looks promising, as it seems an easy walk to the Bastei

..in which case, the following may be of interest:

It's not the cheapest of stopovers (but convenient for the Bastei as you say).

If you're staying in the area for a few days, however, the campsite at Konigstein might be more convenient. The trains are cheap, and about every 30 minutes from very early to very late, so Rathen (for the Bastei) and Dresden itself are easy visits, and you have all the town facilities in walking distance.

The "Festung" (Castle) at Konigstein is spectacularly located and worth a visit, and the Lilliensten (a mini Bastei) is a walk across the river by ferry.

A number of the other little town up the river are also quite attractive, and easy by train.

There are various "group" offers on ticketing, which makes it very cheap for families etc. but even an individual day ticket covering all the immediate area, and all Dresden (trains, buses, trams, ferries) is, I think, even now only €8.50.

In other words, it's an area that merits a few days exploring.

If you do bikes, there is a cycle track nearly all the length of the Elbe.
