To define the two forums’ purposes more sensibly, I suggest that the Motorhome Matters description be changed to “Chat with hundreds of motorhome enthusiasts like yourself and seek advice...” and that Hints and Tips becomes “Pass on your favourite recommendations...”.

As requested...

Thanks.

Appreciate the humour lads - keep it up. I look forward to this forum every morning over breakfast. My OH finds it strange that I often burst into laughter with a mouthful of tea! I do like Duncan's new titles. Maybe Rich & Derrick should turn on their count so we can see what titles they have bee assigned.How about "Derrick - awesome details" & "Tracker- subtle humorist "

Forum user titles were originally ''awarded’ based on a user’s number of posts and the time (in days) since they joined. the forum.

The original titles and posts/days thresholds were

New User - 0/0

Visitor - 75/60

Regular Visitor - 150/70

Contributor - 300/80

Frequent Contributor - 400/100

Permanent Fixture - 500/120

Stalwart - 600/140

Expert - 1200/240

Some users (eg. members of the support staff) had specialised titles.

The titles were revised at least once prior to the latest exercise. The “Expert” designator was deleted and (for all I know) the criteria for the other titles were also twiddled.

Although forum users can choose to hide their post-count via the forum control-panel and this stops the user title being displayed, the post-count can still be ascertained via the coloured stars beneath a user’s name on his/her postings.

Star colours count as follows:-

Green = 25 posts

Purple = 100 posts

Blue = 500 posts

Red = 1000 posts

Silver = 2000 posts

Gold = 5000 posts

Star-wise you currently have a 1 purple and 3 greens (100 + (3 x 25)) indicating a post-count from 175 to 199.

As I type this I have 2 gold, 1 red and 4 purple stars ((2 x 5000) + 1000 + (4 x 100)) which equates to from 11400 to 11424 posts.

As forum users cannot invisibilise their stars, it should be easy enough to establish the relationship between the latest user titles (There won’t be many of them) and the post-count that causes each title to be awarded.

The star system was originally described as “...an easy way of telling who's been around for a while - generally a user with a high post count is quite experienced and a good person to ask advice from!” :D :D :D

Makes you wonder how they ever came to that conclusion.

( Maybe Warners used to have a " spin " department ? )

This set of forums was a follow-on from the MMM motorhome forum that was restricted initially to subscribers to MMM magazine and then extended to MMM readers with entry to the forum via a code printed in the magazine.

The MMM motorhome forum had a far smaller user population than this one and members usually had a good deal of motorcaravanning expertise and postings were more serious, focused and polite. It eventually all got a bit ’samey’ and Warners decided to have an ‘open' set of forums instead.

Although there was real concern about going ‘open’, I don’t think it was appreciated quite how catastrophic a free-to-join, free-for-all policy would intially be, and the present forum in its very early days was a veritable comic madhouse until the Chatterbox section was added.

I understand that a major software revision is on the cards to make these forums more like MHFacts and MHFun, with useful extra features like ‘thanking’ and ‘ignore’ buttons and easy links to Facebook and Twitter.

The world has changed and so has the forum as it has evolved and although I have never been in favour of paying before maybe it is time for it to be subscription based? It would probably need to be cost effective enough to make it worth Warners time and expertise of administering it whilst still being acceptable to most if not all existing and potential new contributors.

Perhaps to join and have 'read only access' could continue to be free so that newcomers could get a taste of what goes on before paying?

How about £10 a year?

I would pay it as for me - still learning after 50 years of motorhoming - it is well worth it for the valuable knowledge and entertainment content from most contributors.

...I would pay it...

I wouldn’t...

And neither would I.

I subscribe to MMM so would expect it to be free to subscribers (as it originally was).

There seems to be crowd resistance to paying for internet services from newspapers and magazines.  There is some advertising revenue and here will be promotional value to Warners from having the audience of forum viewers as well as contributors.  It's probably worth their while and more to keep this forum running and i think it will be in their interests to put more effort into weeding spam promptly.

I've never bothered with subscription forums, not sure why.  It's not really the money - I find some of them over-organised (too many categories etc) to be worth wading through.

I broadly agree with you but the forum does not need to change it's format to justify charging, it just needs a filter to stop the generally one off spammers joining and paying might be one way.

Another way might be to only allow read only access for 24 hours to new members after which time they can contribute.

Anyway the new moderators seem to be largely on top of it for now so well done to them and to Duncan for his efforts.
