SJ1976
Hello everyone I'm looking for some advice, my mums motorhome was recently stolen, it was sorn'ed but it wasn't insured, she was selling it as she hasn't driven it since my dad passed away. The police thus far haven't caught anyone for it but they did get the MH back, it's pretty bashed up as it was joyriders, is there anywhere she can go to to help pay for the repairs or is she covered under anything? Thank you in advance x
George Collings
In reality the vehicle was uninsured .The motor insurance industry compensation scheme covering uninsured drivers is only in respect of injury not damage so no help there. The only suggestion I can make is if your father was a member of the armed services or other organisation with associated charities there may be some help available. Insurance rates for Sorned vehicle in secure storage are very reasonable but that is no help now.
Will86
SJ Publicise the situation on as many forums and newspapers as you can. There are those who will assist but only if they are aware. Will
Keith T
I would have thought even if a MH is on SORN, it should always be insured, for Fire and Theft at least? If the insurance lapses, then would the 'renewal' not be counted as a 'new' policy otherwise?
747
Are you positive the Insurance has lapsed? Given the fact that many Insurance Companies automatically renew unless you tell them otherwise, they may have gone ahead and renewed it.
Brock
See if your mother has any insurance e.g. house insurance that provides free legal help. Also check whether she is a member of organisations that give free legal help such as Which, CSMA [now called Boundless], AA. You do not need to insure your vehicle if it is kept off the road and SORN https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-insurance/uninsured-vehicles Ask MID if there is any insurance. It's free for your mother to search. MID also provides links to organisations which may be able to give you advice. http://www.askmid.com As has already been said, publicity might bring a knight in shining armour; seeking help from your Dad's friends and family may get you something; depending on age and health of your Mum, there may be specific charities that can be approached.
