Mel E Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 Ms Merkel is raising the VAT rate in Germany from 16% to 19% from 01.01.2007. This was announced some months ago and is thought to be largely responsible for a German mini-boom over the last few months. Well, if Gordo gave you a few months' notice that VAT was rising from 17.5% to 20.5%, wouldn't you go out NOW and buy that flat screen TV, new car, new motorhome, etc., BEFORE the rise? The net effect of this is that German motorhome dealers are likely to have excess stocks of used / nearly new motorhomes by the end of this year, and German punters will be thin on the ground having spent up before the rate increase, so now is likely to be a great time to buy used. Good luck!
Brian Kirby Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 However, since we get the German VAT back, and only (only!?) have to pay 17.5%, after 1/1/07 might be quite a good time to buy new. I'd expect asking prices to be dropped a bit post 1/1 to compensate for the 3% overnight rise, just to keep the stock turning over. Who knows? Happy New (German) Year everyone?
