Glow plugs fiat ducato

Hi-I'm new to the forum but was just after some advice. I recently been advised my glow plugs need replaced on my 2008 burstner-2 look they are going to be stuck and require specialist engineering to get out-fair enough. Can anyone give me an idea of how much I should expect to pay? Worried it's going to be a big bill! Thanks.

Emmaguy,

First welcome to the forum.

Second, what engine is in your Burstner?

Third, on what evidence and by whom have you been told you need to replace your glow plugs?

My view, get a second opinion before agreeing to the work.

Keith.

Engine was not wanting to start in the winter first time-needed to be turned on twice. Local garage have advised they need replaced-I use my van a lot in the winter so wanted to get it done in plenty of time. The throttle body needs replaced as well-its just recently started but revs really low. I've got a trip planned next week to the outer hebrides so I'm hoping it is going to be ok for a week-not a place I want to breakdown!

Are you saying in the winter it needs two attempts before it starts?

When in extreme cold I would turn ignition on but not turn the engine. When glow light extinguished I would then switch on and wait for glow light to go out and then start engine.

As suggested, a second opinion would be advisable.

I have a Fiat Ducato 3 litre engine and mine sometimes doesn't start first time especially if it hasn't been run for a while. It's not unusual to give it 3 or 4 attempts.

I've bought a new earth strap from Halfords but haven't fitted it yet - I'm hoping this will improve starting.

As others have said, get a second opinion.

By comparison, my previous Fiat Ducato 2.8 litre used to start first time whatever the weather.

Emmaguy,

So you are planning on risking having them changed just because it was hard to start last winter? If so you need to get each individual glow plug tested and then only replace those which have failed.

A good mechanic will be able to test the glow plugs in situ, a bad one will simply say they all need changing and charge you more!

You definitely do not want to break down in the Outer Hebrides! It happened to us on our first trip in our brand new motorhome and although there is an excellent garage/mechanic in Tarbert they are limited to what they can do with a vehicle under warranty. It was a very long journey to Inverness in limp-home mode!
