Ijmuiden to Black Forest - Motorhome

We are travelling for the first time in our motorhome on the DFDS Newcastle to Ijmuiden ferry 3rd week in September. We will then be travelling on our 2 weeks holiday to the Black Forest. Can someone suggest best route to travel please. I think I have picked up that from 2016 we should purchase a badge for travelling on the Autobahn - can someone let me know where we can purchase one of these. We are 2 adults who enjoy walking (not hill climbing) and will have our mountain bikes. Can anyone suggest quiet campsites suitable for motorhomes. We are also happy to use Wohnmobilestellpatz. Places of interest to visit would be most welcomed.

This post would be better in the more-frequented Motorhome Matters section (maybe one of the mods.... ;-) )

...the German PKW toll charge on Autobahns is still (AFAIK) under suspension given that the EU objected to the proposals. As such Autobahn use in Germany remains free (except for HGV lorries).

You won't need an Autobahn sticker, but, depending on your visit plans, you might find it useful to obtain an Umweltplakette (emissions sticker), as there are a growing number of town and city-centres that require one.

You can obtain one online for a small fee from the Berlin State Authorities (valid throughout Germany), for a small fee, or test your German at a TüV (testing) station or motor dealers in Germany and get one. There is little cost premium in buying online (but only via the link below) and the turnround to the UK is usually only a couple of days.

TBH, since most restrictions can now only be avoided via a "green" sticker, it is probably only worth applying if you qualify for this. In addition, the penalties are not automatically policed as is, for instance, the London LEZ, and the penalties for transgression are not draconian. Given the €6 cost and the fact it will last the lifetime of the vehicle, if you can get a green one, it is probably worthwhile.

As for route, much depends on how fast you want to get to the Black Forest. The main Autoroute down the West Side of the Rhine is the quickest (and the odd stop-off actually on the Rhine can be good), but it is busy. The Autobahns are a fine way of burying distance when they are running OK, but they can be awful if there is something untoward, such as an accident, or the all-too-common roadworks.

If you have time, a wander down off the more-beaten track might be better.
