Guest Frank Wilkinson Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 I've just taken delivery of a Lunar Telstar on a Renault Master base vehicle. I'm very pleased with it overall. The engine is a 2.5 ltr and although I chose the 6 speed manual version there is an automatic option, as well as a 3.0 litre engine option as well.Of course I don't know what you want to spend but for me this model ticked all the boxes. It's a shade under 20' long, has the option of two singles or a wide double and the GT pack includes a wind-out awning, microwave, drop-down 7" TV in the cab and a freeview digital receiver. We went to the NEC with the intention of buying an Auto-Sleepers Neuvo but that and many others had a slightly claustrophobic feel. When we walked into the Lunar it felt so bright and airy and that clinched it for my wife. Here's a link and feel free to email me if you want to know anything else about this model.http://www.lunarcaravans.com/motorhomes/index.htm
robin Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Our Master has the quickshift auto option - it is an electronically automated version of the manual 'box, with a manual 'paddle shift' option. 2006 models were only available with the 2.5l dci 120. This works superbly in my opinion, it is very smooth and doesn't use any more power than the straight manual 'box - it is also more economical - Renault claim an 8% increase in mpg. The 2.5 litre engine is more than adequate giving relaxed 75-80mph autoroute cruising and copes with hills well. (3.5t - 6.7meter 'van). For 2007, Renault are offering this box on both the dci 120 and dci140 - these are both 2.5l - as the 3.0l is discontinued. Note that there is a report on this forum of a failure on this gearbox, ours has been o.k. though. HTH
Mel Sea Posted February 22, 2007 Posted February 22, 2007 I think that I might just have the answer to your problem sitting on my drive. Similar problems to your self except that they now mean that the beautiful beast must go. Might you be interested?
twooks Posted February 22, 2007 Posted February 22, 2007 We started to look at the option of an Auto-Clutch and contacted: "We are pleased to enclose information to give you a clear description of the product which we have installed on several occasions to the T4's operated by the AA for their roadside repair services. It may be possible to arrange a test drive should you so wish. The price for fitting AutoClutch is usually around £995 + v.a.t. (£1169.13) depending on the complexities of installation and our regional installers are free to set their own prices. Each vehicle is subject to survey prior to firm quotation as there may be differences in condition, specification and accessories even for apparently similar models. AutoClutch can generally (depending on age, mileage etc.) be transferred from one vehicle to the next at a typical charge of GBP 450.00 + v.a.t including new ancillary parts." info@vehvac.com B-)
Ranger Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Hello jimmyocharlie, I like you have a left leg which is not much use following a few strokes. The electric clutch by T.B.Turbo is very good when you consider that your 'van does not suffer from less M.P.G. as do automatics. But as I have always had automatics including many tow cars over the years I stick to automatic boxes, which are as rare as hens teeth when it comes to motor homes. Automatic boxes are usually fairly trouble free if serviced properly. I have only ever had trouble with one automatic box that was in my last 'van, an Autotrail Cherokee 'L' on a VW 2.4 TDi, which was 20 foot long, which had to have a reconditioned box fitted, and is up for sale by www.knightmotorcaravans.co.uk But I think you will have missed that one as two couples are after it already. My 'van at the moment is on a Ford Transit 2.5 automatic. I think the only 'vans with automatic boxes are Ford Transits, Mercs, VWs, & Renalt Masters bought new, trying to find preloved automatics vary difficult to find any unless you fancy a big American R.V.
Lee1st Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Hi There, I have a Mercedes 316cdi with their sprintshift autoclutch system and drive it in auto practically all the time. It seems a very smooth system and you can't tell that the gears are changing pretty much above second gear. The change from first to second can be a slight clunk, especially from cold but really no problem and you can of course change gear yourself, but without the inconvenience of that left foot work all the time. I thoroughly recommend it! Good luck, Lee
