oorgiz Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Thinking I was going to be busy over the christmas holiday I had no plans to go away in the M/H.It now looks like the plans have fallen through,so checking my CCC &CC books I see there are few sites open all year ( or just till n/year) and I assume that by the time I find out for sure of my change of plan 23/24 Dec it will be to late to book the limited sites. So has anybody experience of touring the far north highlands at this time of year? I fully realize that there will be no sites open, and at the risk of upsetting some, I do enjoy wild camping, my van is winterised. Some may think its madness driving in rain sleet and snow but with a bit of research via the weather sites you dont need to be driving in the worst areas/ weathers, remember people do live in these places and with a little thought to what they are about to do manage everyday life just fine. any and all comments welcome. oorgiz.

livewire Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 We have often toured n/w scotland/hebrides at this time and have thoroughly enjoyed it: Weather warmer than your expect due to westery winds/gulf stream. No crowds (understatement). Long nights are cosy in the van. Ferry trip adds a felling of isolation. Wild camping absolutely no problem (no other option). I have often felt is is welcomed on some of the islands as they welcome the tourist business to their small comunity that has no tourist facilities. If you like walking/outdoors, some of the island coasts are wonderful. Just remember though that if island hopping, make sure you are not stranded for 2 days over the new year holiday. Couldn't recommed it highly enough (and there are no midges)
