Trying to be positive

“She’ll have to go back after Brexit”, I said to my wife, tongue in cheek but loudly enough to be overheard, when it became clear the lady behind the Till in Marks & Sparks was a Scot.

“I cringe every time I hear Nicola Sturgeon open her mouth on TV”, said the Scottish lady, so she’d got the message that I was being tongue in cheek and felt able to empathise.  “You just can’t believe it”, she said, “it’s one thing after another – and America has Donald Trump to put up with from tomorrow”.

“You’re a nice lady, so you can stay in Norwich if you like”, I said - but then as an afterthought added “but I’m an immigrant from Lancashire myself, so maybe I’ll be subject to scrutiny by the Anglicans too”.

Our weekly shop, in the Saxamundham Branch of Waitrose, involves me driving, because Management likes to be chauffeured these days, but then I’m allowed to go straight to the Café because she likes to wander the aisles alone. This provides me with an unsupervised grazing opportunity, usually a bacon sandwich, together with a coffee, a read of a newspaper and, best of all, a people watching opportunity.

You might think that the Saxamundham Waitrose is a middle class sort of place, especially since there is a Tesco very close by, but it does attract all sorts, at least to the Café. It is mostly middle class but this lot still provide a spectrum oftypes; lots of probable Liberals and probable Greens, lots of dead-cert Toriesand lots of Champagne (or at least Prosecco) Socialists too.  Relatively few what you might call proper working class but quite a few wheelchair occupants and their carers, the latter looking like they are genuine low earners - but nonetheless content to take refreshment in Waitrose since on this occasion it’s part of the job.

The newspapers they read give the clue to whether my first impression of their politics stacks up because the lefties (of course) read the Guardian, the Tories the Telegraph or Times and those with no intellect or shameread the Daily Mail.  You do sometimes spot a Daily Express being read but I suspect these are mostly on the Café’s newspaper rack because a member of staff (or “Partner”, as Waitrose calls them)has chosen it.  Proper working class would read the Daily Mirror.

There’s not much conversation with strangers to be had in this Waitrose Café and it’s also the sort of place (partly because it’s a bit small) where people reserve tables and spread themselves out rather selfishly, to claim territory, before they get their refreshments.  They also dump any remaining crockery on their favoured table on to someone else’s, rather than taking the short extra distance to the servery.    There were two couples this morning who divided labour to achieve this in a well-practised, swooping, almost military operation to command and slide together a pair of tables along the comfortable settee while the other two (in this case the menfolk) queued for the refreshments.  These were tea and scones or cake (at 1100am)and from this choice and their apparel, I deduced they were Liberal/Greenies.

I was once spoken to (in both senses) during the run up tothe Referendum last year, by a Guardian-reader who wanted to check how I wouldbe voting and see whether he could convert me if necessary.  He was middle class, retired and determined to advocate Voting Leave.  I kept mycards close to my chest in an effort to keep him guessing and then eventually confided that I would be voting Remain because as far as I could see we could vote leave anytime, so why the rush?  This was a waste of time because in the event East Anglia voted overwhelmingly to Leave.

But I’m acclimatising to East Anglian ways, driving more sedately, waiting patiently in queues while the person ahead chats to the shopkeeper and eating more pork.  I’ve come around to wanting to Leave too, now that the vote has gone that way.  And I’ve started reading the Guardian, but inaddition to the Times and Telegraph, and it does seem to be better written.  I’ll go and see my GP about it; there must be something you can take.

He'll probably prescribe the Daily Mail for a bit of balance ;-) ..........

It may seem nasty at first, but that's just shows your middle class blinkers are being cured >:-) .......

I think it comes with copy and paste. I had a similar thing happen when I posted a reply on the FT website. In order to protect their copyright (prevent people copying and pasting articles) the FT put something in the text with it. But since I was copying and pasting my own reply (to save the bother of typing it out again) on to another website I wasn't really breaching anyone's copyright. Nevertheless, because it had been posted in the FT it came with their sub text when I tried to copy and paste it on to another website. In fact the moderator sent me a PM to ask me what it was because he had never seen anything like it before. It had upset their page formatting somehow :$

I can confirm that what you were seeing is formatting code from Word, from which I had copied and pasted the text directly. I should have saved into Notepad or similar to strip off the code. I'll try to remember next time.

By the way these posts are just for entertainment, nothing profound so respond in kind if you wish, no need if you don't.
