The “Comfortmatic” transmission available for Fiat Ducatos is a robotised-manual system comprising a normal 6-speed gearbox and clutch with a mechanical/electronic ‘overlay’ that allows the clutch-pedal to be dispensed with. It’s described here

As there’s no ‘slippage’, fuel economy with ComfortMatic should be at least as good (probably better) than with the manual equivalent and power/torque at the wheels will be unaffected.

Automatic transmissions have come a long way since traditional ’slushboxes’ were fitted, and even transmission types that include a torque converter can nowadays be expected to match a manual gearbox for fuel economy.

Fiat has had an automatic-motorhome virtual monopoly with Comfortmatic, but Ford has (finally) begun to market a torque-converter transmission (“SelectShift”) for FWD Transit Mk 8 Euro 6 models, and received wisdom is that Citroen/Peugot will offer a (robotised-manual?) auto-box for Euro 6 Relays/Boxers.

I've rapidly come to the conclusion that it's easier (and quicker) to ask you a question than it is to Google it :D

Great info indeed.

All the best,

Andrew
