Derek Uzzell
The “Comfortmatic” transmission available for Fiat Ducatos is a robotised-manual system comprising a normal 6-speed gearbox and clutch with a mechanical/electronic ‘overlay’ that allows the clutch-pedal to be dispensed with. It’s described here http://tinyurl.com/j9j8px7 As there’s no ‘slippage’, fuel economy with ComfortMatic should be at least as good (probably better) than with the manual equivalent and power/torque at the wheels will be unaffected. Automatic transmissions have come a long way since traditional ’slushboxes’ were fitted, and even transmission types that include a torque converter can nowadays be expected to match a manual gearbox for fuel economy. Fiat has had an automatic-motorhome virtual monopoly with Comfortmatic, but Ford has (finally) begun to market a torque-converter transmission (“SelectShift”) for FWD Transit Mk 8 Euro 6 models, and received wisdom is that Citroen/Peugot will offer a (robotised-manual?) auto-box for Euro 6 Relays/Boxers. I've rapidly come to the conclusion that it's easier (and quicker) to ask you a question than it is to Google it :D Great info indeed. All the best, Andrew
