RogerC
Thropy - 2017-01-29 12:50 PMWe are now totally confused after our research for towing our VW Up. Electronic? Manual? We need to be able to reverse can anyone help through their experience? A frame reversing is a regal pain. The reason is because what is effectively the trailer (A frame and your VW) is very short which means any inputs from you at the front are exacerbated at the 'hitch up' point....also as the VW has steerable wheels (unlocked steering) they will want to castor as though they have a mind of their own. Having 'A' framed with a Smart car for a few years, and even having been in my past a Class 1 HGV driver (40ft arctic's etc) on the rare occasions I needed to reverse I would unhook the 'Smart' and deal with it that way.......oh as for 'A' frame? We had one from Armitages, heavy but because of the weight we had confidence in it. Give them, and the other manufacturers a call and they will give you all the necessary info.....we did our research and decided to go with Armitage as the system was easy to fit, robust and gave us the confidence we wanted..... you might decide otherwise. Good luck.
Dave C
We got our A-frame from these people http://www.smart-tow.com/towframe.htm and have to say we are very pleased with it - and no problem reversing. Dave
