StuartO
We don't seem to be discussing the Canadian attack on the mosque and who is to blame? I'm not sure that seeking to apportion blame (is it Trump, the media, popularism, etc) takes us very far - any more than 1 million Brits joining the petition to cancel the invitation of President Trump to UK for a State Visit will achieve anything much. As our PM said at the press conference in Turkey, UK is responsible for UK's immigration policy and the US is responsible for the US's immigration policies. Why are so many people in our Country unable to mind their own Country's business and keep their noses out of other people's?

The former is a legitimate issue for universal comment, the latter as you say is one entirely a matter for the US. We are free to comment on religious and or race discrimination wherever it exists in the world are we not Stuart? America prides itself on it's high standards in relation to freedom of thought conscience and religion and the US State Department comments freely and often criticises the failings of other countries in annual reports they issue about the degree to which other countries adhere to that principle. That makes them equally open to criticism from outside the US if they fail to live up to those standards in my view.Veronica

On his Facebook site removed since the arrest he also reportedly "liked" US President Donald Trump and French Front National leader Marine Le Pem. No surprises there then. :-( Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau gave a very sincere and moving speech. That makes them equally open to criticism from outside the US if they fail to live up to those standards in my view.Veronica There are lots of countries in the world where discrimination is practised, for example in South Africa big business has to appoint black people to senior positions (and so what are effectively token appointees with genuinely capable people working in the background) and in the Vatican you will probably find that the key psitions, perhaps all positions, are held by Catholics and in Israel they are all Jewish. In predominantly muslim countries the leaders are all muslims, often of only one denomination. In Northern Ireland we have had a power sharing arrangement based on religion as well as partisan affiliation. Are you really suggesting that we in UK, the unelected ordinary, have the right (and perhaps even the duty?) to object loudly to all of this simply because some people choose to do things in their own country differently than we do in ours? Freedom of speech needs to be exercised wisely and responsibly or it's being abused.

Bulletguy
This 24 year old Canadian was sentenced to 75 years with no parole for killing three RCMP officers three years ago. Hopefully that will prove to be the absolute minimum sentencing mass murdering scum Bissonnette receives. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/justin-bourque-gets-5-life-sentences-no-chance-of-parole-for-75-years-1.2818516 Former students who were at school with Bissonnette and others who knew him from social media have spoken out about him; "Bissonnette was an “unpopular nerd,” and was not always taken seriously by classmates.“He replied to insults, but never with physical violence,” Labrecque Berger said, adding that he and his twin brother didn’t integrate with other students. Another former classmate, Jean-Michel Allard-Prus, who studied politics with him, at Université Laval and has kept in touch with him, told Le Journal de Quebec that Bissonnette, “has right-wing political ideas, pro-Israel, anti-immigration. I had many debates with him about Trump. He was obviously pro-Trump.” Vincent Boissoneault, who grew up with Bissonnette, was friends with him on Facebook, told the Globe and Mail, “I can tell you he was certainly no Muslim convert. I wrote him off as a xenophobe. I didn’t even think of him as totally racist, but he was enthralled by a borderline racist nationalist movement.” Acquaintances said he became interested in the far right movement when Marine Le Pen, the leader of the far-right National Front in France, spoke in Quebec City in March 2016. Francois Deschamps, a committee member for the “Welcome to Refugees – Quebec City” group said Bissonnette was "known to several activists in Quebec City for his pro-Le Pen and anti-feminist identity positions at Université Laval and on social networks.” We see a lot of what extreme right-wing people do and say,” Deschamps told the newspaper. He said Bissonnette made statements on their Facebook page, “acting like a troll.” Along with anti-immigrant and other right-wing beliefs, he also made anti-women’s rights remarks, Deschamps said.
