Bulletguy
An excellent Panorama screened last night. What happens when a community is changed by immigration? Slough has gone from a majority white British town to a place where they're the minority. Ten years ago, Panorama's Richard Bilton reported on how Slough was struggling to cope with its migrant population. Now he's back. He finds a town with a booming economy and new families arriving every day. However, now white British people are abandoning Slough, and some foreign workers say the dream is over. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b08h4y03/panorama-life-in-immigration-town

Slough is on my doorstep. Boomtown or what? Lowest unemployment rate in the country and thriving businesses everywhere. I found it a really interesting programme with some telling observations made by the people the presenter spoke to on what it is like to live there. Loved the Pakistani man who said something like "if I am rude then you should throw me out" when speaking about the Roma in Chalvey. The black guy who said "we were invited" when asked why the new arrivals were a problem. Then the white British couple whom I suspect are most represented the main demographic of motorhomers who are retired and now moving to Norfolk because Slough doesn't feel like home to them anymore. The EU workers appear very highly regarded by their employers and the Brits who work with them consider them their friends. If only that were mirrored outside the workplace. The greatest hope for better integration as I see it was with the children of migrants, especially those from the EU, who mix more freely with British kids in the schools. However that would take another decade to have any real impact on social cohesion. If people see immigration as a problem then it is a problem whether it be one of perception or reality. Wouldn't like to be among the policy makers who have the very difficult task in determining what are acceptable and manageable levels of migration and how to balance that with the many other factors including our economic prosperity. Veronica Exactly what i thought too Veronica. It also raised many questions too i'd like to ask those bleating "i can't get work cuz them immigrants are 'stealing' our jobs". Spanish guy, not young, not fluent with English, gets a job within three weeks of arriving here working in a small factory. Can't remember what they were making now but it was manual production work. Boss paid above average wage and doesn't want to let the guy go because he's a damned good grafter. Which begs the question......why hadn't any local British bothered to apply for the job there doesn't it? It's easier having duvet days. The British man married to Polish wife, also interesting. Disgusting that his wife felt their future so uncertain, they'd already sold their house and gone rented "in case we have to leave". The Brit couple moving to Norfolk.....i got the same impression as you! I doubt either had ever made any attempt to meet the neighbours and no intention of doing! Barryd999
Yes a very good and balanced program. I used to do jobs in Slough now and again as I had a customer there but was probably last there about 2007 before the recession and about the time the first film was made. It was a bit grim and the place I went was a Print and Design firm just like the one at the beginning of the film. The attitude to immigrants from some of the workers there was lets just say "Colourful". So ten years on, migration has massively increased but the town is now booming as a result. I am pleased to hear that. Of course you hear the usual rants about it being a strain on the NHS and housing from those looking for an excuse to find a a reason to speak out against immigration but they are blaming the wrong people. Its logical that if an economy is booming you spend some of that income on infrastructure to accommodate such a boom but of course in the case of the NHS those in power want it to appear like its immigration thats responsible for its demise not the fact that they are running it into the sand to privatise it. The bit about the school was interesting though. Its thrived and turned around from a school likely to be closed and very run down because of immigration. What is worrying about all this though is that despite the town turning itself around on the back of migrants 54% still voted for Brexit. Why? Why a dislike for foreigners in a town thats boomed because of them? Of course many employers both in that documentary and around the country are now in fear of the "Good" workers they have leaving and that seems to be happening. The skilled and useful migrants that have really contributed will and are leaving because of Brexit, the program showed that but the dross and desperate will stay. I can only conclude that many (The older generation I suspect) want the success but just dont like having foreigners in their town.

So are you saying that because some in Slough dont like Asians they voted to leave the EU? That really would be odd but not surprising as this seems to have been the case in a lot of areas which simply enforces the view that many really didnt know what they were voting for. I really want to know why in a town that had prospered and is now booming mainly down to immigration why so many people voted out. You think it would have been Remain Central. PJay
Barryd999 - 2017-03-01 4:55 PM PJay - 2017-03-01 4:17 PM Barryd999 - 2017-03-01 3:20 PM pelmetman - 2017-03-01 1:10 PM Barryd999 - 2017-03-01 1:06 PM What is worrying about all this though is that despite the town turning itself around on the back of migrants 54% still voted for Brexit. Why? Why a dislike for foreigners in a town thats boomed because of them? . Once you become a stranger in your rural idyll Barry ;-) ........ Then you'll know *-) ....... Why would I be a stranger though? We are talking are we not about Europeans, we are all Europeans. so what difference is it to me if my neighbour originally came from Surrey or Warsaw? Or is it really the case that we dont want foreigners because they are foreign which the Brexiteers have denied all along but in Slough they have brought nothing but success so why did they still vote out? Barry, I did not see the film. But I do now Slough, and the population is mainly Asian. NOT east europeans! and Syrians On the whole the Asians are hard workers, and mostly law abiding , which can't be said for the current flow of criminals, who are arriving , pretending to be children!. AND i did not see many immigrants in Yorkshire (well your part) when I was last there The on;y ones I saw where the Ghurka, and families stationed at Catterick army camp PJay Yes I know that but the program focused on the main on the Europeans that had migrated there in the past ten years. As I said, i did not see the program 1 But I am saying that the Asian population of Slough (which is a big community) if you have seen the sari shops in town, They are the ones voting out of the EU, as the EE's are upsetting their way of life in Slough. You rarely see immigrants where I live, but my friend lives in Boston (lincs) and that is overrun with immigrants ! i have no objection to others coming to Uk to WORK, as we have too many lazy Brits, who get more on benefits , than if they worked, and expect more ! I would make them get a job! PJay
