Britains Racist Election

Another excellent Channel 4 documentary, this was first aired two years ago but repeated early Saturday morning. I recorded and watched today. It happened back in the 60's and i well remember it. It kicked off with an MP warning about foreigners "having the whip hand" over the white man and "floods" of these people coming into "our country" where we were being "overrun".

 

Sound familiar? History repeating itself?

 

The only difference was back then all these "foreigners" were black or Asian people. Today it's Muslims or refugees fleeing war torn Syria.

 

It's a worthwhile watch.

 

When maverick Conservative Peter Griffiths won the West Midlands seat of Smethwick in the 1964 General Election following an anti-immigration campaign, it triggered one of the worst chapters in the history of British race relations. Violence, assassination attempts, and even the creation of a British Ku Klux Klan tore a community apart - and took a single street to the brink of official racial segregation. This documentary tells the story of what happened when a small town gained international notoriety.

Were you actually there in the 60s cos I was and the Jamaican parties in North London were fantastic first time I tasted Gumbo and had real Jamaican rum it was a knockout coming round was not funny but we went back for more super people always laughing and grateful for our friendship and the chance of a better life. john B-)

Yes i was in my mid teens at the time of the Smethwick election and it's only 40 miles south of where i live. Tory racist Griffiths political slogan was "if you want a ni**er for a neighbour, vote Labour". Nice people eh? *-)

Reading some of these posts causes one to question the sanity of those posting.  I suppose with the ready availability of 'social meeeja' it is only to be expected that certain questionable thoughts will be posted.........like constantly harping on about things that happened decades even centuries ago as though it has any relevance to today except that as part of history it has been a minuscule part of  the progress of the planet.

Strange how some appear to gain so much satisfaction from constantly bleating on about how bad this country is.....now or decades/centuries ago.  Still some need something to moan about to keep them happy.... :-)

Anthony looks to me like it's time to realise some are overflowing with the milk of human kindness and understanding.  Unfortunately some appear to be drowning in it but don't realise it.........

So shouting Allah u akbar and chopping someone's head off or detonating a suicide bomb isn't racist?  Surely the fact that these fanatics are committing mass murder against 'infidels' is the most severe form of racism there is?  Still most of us are aware that it is the fanatics or the ill educated...(or even wrongly educated by 'mad mullahs...themselves more often than not illiterate') that commit these atrocities.  Unfortunately there will always be those apologists and appeasers, those who take offence on behalf of the world (ego maniacs and self serving adherents of sack cloth and ashes.....oh woe is me types) that go to great lengths to shout 'racism' 'bigot' 'sexist' 'xenophobe' 'Islamophobia' 'zealot' etc whenever anyone who is of a balanced mind speaks out against such racist, terrorist, religious based activities merely because they feel it necessary to 'protect' those elements of certain minorities that one is clearly aware are innocent bystanders.

One last thing....it's interesting that those who so doggedly defend those elements of society that in no way conduct themselves with integration, understanding and accepting of diversity are so eager to attack those who themselves exhibit traits of patriotism and wanting to protect their way of life..............one rule for the fanatics and another for the more accepting element of society methinks.

Rather unpleasant and regrettable BUT it was 1964 and things have thankfully moved on somewhat.  Yes there are similarities and in the opening few minutes the comment by the lady (white) says it all relevant to today...

".....came as a massive volume of people....Smethwick was not ready"

Relate that today and history is repeating itself.  If nothing else politicians like B'liar, Mandelson etc who sent the 'recruiting' parties to the eastern european countries poised to join the EU encouraging people there to come to the UK.  Theirs was based on political manipulation in an attempt to retain 'power'.  If you can't accept that as truth then look into comments made (grudgingly because the truth was there for all to see)by 'The Prince of Darkness' himself.  

Thankfully society has moved on from those days when political correctness, civil rights, equality etc were not even in the public psyche.

Smethwick....housing shortage and deprived social area and as is said in the video....'shiploads' of people descended on it......so what did those responsible for this 'invasion' expect to happen?

People rebel against 'fast tracking' an immigrant family with regard to housing?  What do you expect?  These days we have had, for example, 'terrorists' and their families living on benefits but it didn't cause rioting so things have clearly moved on from back then.

Regarding the defeat of Labour by an opposition standing on an 'anti immigration' issue surely Labour historians should have advised B'liar etc against actively seeking out and encouraging vast numbers of immigrants which would too rapidly change the fabric of society in so many areas as to make it another 'immigration issue'.  So history repeats itself in terms of immigration but this time because of a party leader more concerned with 'self' than country. 

Overcrowding with numerous immigrant families living in one house clearly would cause existing residents some concern so one supposes 'Marshall Street' was inevitable given where society was at the time.

Malcom X was nothing more than a firebrand with his comments including references to gas ovens.  It did nothing to further his or the immigrant cause if anything it cause the position to become ever more entrenched.

KKK?  What can one say.....simply despicable but thankfully only a small number of them.

Fast forward to today and it is clear that indeed in many ways history repeats itself.  Mass immigration distorted society, politicians didn't listen and it gave rise to social discontent.  Today it was not, and in some parts of the population still isn't PC to talk about immigration and it's effect on the fabric of some areas, it's change being too rapid to allow adjustment and integration.  If one did so one is/was labelled racist, bigot etc etc and in a way gave rise to Farage today as it did with Griffiths back in the 60's.  Thankfully Farage didn't precipitate such behaviour as occurred back in the 60's but at least he 'did' bring about a realisation in the chattering classes and political world that there is a problem and simply by ignoring it it won't go away.

The final comment says it all....."the politicians of 'all parties' are playing politics with immigration and it is dangerous....very dangerous".

So yes an interesting look back on how things 'were', how history does not always provide lessons that are long lasting and that even if lessons were learned from those times past politicians are clearly not above using immigration as a political weapon......B'liar clearly did, Gordon Brown called a concerned member of the public a bigot and in general until Farage (like or loathe the man)brought pressure to bear on the main parties the topic was ignored.  Possibly because of being ignored, even denied by many, for so long it precipitated the kick in the teeth that was delivered to the political elite in the referendum.

An interesting comment was made by Rachel Burgin (Labour candidate and activist):

"The current diversity narrative lacks reciprocity. Diverse means African, Indian, Japanese, Middle Eastern. But it doesn’t mean Cumbrian."

An interesting comment that not so long ago would have had the chattering PC classes up in arms..........so yes we have moved forward to a more understanding time 'but' the politicians are still 'not' listening, or if they are they are not acting to alleviate or ease peoples fears.
