There are people out there with tall white pointy hats with holes for eyes to see but not be seen. That was a bit of an eye opener. To think someone can shout threaten and bully the forum and Warners MMM with their first posts and have an honest informative thread shut down. Not sure I want to condone or be a part of that. How sad. :-(

In April 2016 the Out&AboutLive forums began to be heavily attacked by spammers. In this May 2016 thread

http://forums.outandaboutlive.co.uk/forums/Motorhomes/Motorhome-Matters/Spam-attack/41638/

The then forum Administrator Duncan Evans said

“...Our other moderator has left which doesn't help so if anyone would like to become an official moderator, drop me a PM. There's no obligation for time or duties as you don't get paid...”

and 4 days later commented

"Just to let you all know, two forum members have been appointed as Support Administrators, which means they can remove spam as and when they see it, hopefully over the weekend etc.”

Duncan asked me subsequently if I’d consider being a Moderator (I said OK) and I suggested to him that Keithl also be granted Moderator privileges (which happened).

So the opportunity to become a Moderator was offered to all forum-members last year, but it seems that only two were appointed initially and (at least) another two later on.

As I’ve said several times in the past, the forum-privileges that permit Moderators to deal with spam postings include wide-ranging ‘editing’ capabilities as well as deleting and moving threads or postings. The spamming was counteracted by changes to the forum registration procedure; Duncan Evans ceased being forum Administrator at the end of 2016 and the forums have been essentially leaderless since then. Moderators have not been told by Warners staff how they should use their ‘powers’ and non-Moderators have not been advised what is acceptable to Warners regarding posting to these forums.

I think these forums (and Warners) have had a pretty good deal from the (unpaid) Moderators that were created in 2016. They managed to cope with the spam (hard work sometimes) until the forum software could be modified) and until very recently have remained in the background, occasionally ‘improving’ the forums when they can. (Remember someone going on and on about “USEFULL TIPS” on the Hints and Tips forum? That misspelling has been Moderator-corrected.)

Baden87 has PM-ed me and I’ve told him that, although I can’t tell him why his original postings (and the thread they produced) were removed as I didn’t do this, I could understand the thinking behind the removal. But it’s really up to Daniel Attwood to decide what he wants to happen with these forums.

As it seemed very easy to provide Moderator privileges, it should be just as simple to remove them. If forum-members want no ‘in house’ Moderators and for forum oversight to be restricted totally to a forum Administrator, you should tell Daniel Attwood. If a no-Moderator policy results in spamming restarting, or private ebay-advert references proliferating, or motorhome dealerships getting regularly slagged off, or people at each other's throats like in the Bad Old Days, so be it...

I really like this forum but we have to remember that it is a part of a business and not a democracy. Baden87's post and thread that was removed certainly pointed a finger at a dealer and a defective vehicle if you took the trouble to search.

It was nonsense to say that the message was potentially libellous as the defence to libel is that the stated facts were true - and who better to confirm that to be the case than a previous owner, Baden 87.

However perhaps that dealer is an advertiser in MMM and then the commercial interests hold sway - advertisers are the life-blood of most publications.

What still irks me though is that it MAY be that the purchaser of that vehicle has appeared on this self-same forum and that Baden87s well-meaning warnings are now hidden.

Baden87,

I will PM you with an update.

Baden87 seems to me to be a man on a vengeful mission and, since he has no idea what sort of remedial work has been carried out on the MH since he owned it,it strikes me that he might be being very unfair indeed.  Does he really expect a dealer to scrap a valuable MH simply because he, baden87, having bought it, felt it was unsatisfactory and demanded his money back?  He got his money back didn't he?  A less fussy and demanding person might have been content with a repair.

And by the way the law of libel is not easily avoided simply by not mentioning names etc.  Remember the case of the Commons Speaker's wife who simply posted "look who's trending?" and she had to pay damages because she spread the word by implying criticism of someone who was identifiable.  The proprietor of a website becomes liable for defamation (as well as the person who posted) when they become aware of what has been published on their site, so they are at risk in a situation like this one and so might perfectly reasonably want to duck out of someone else's fight.  Dealers will probably be relectant to take issue with either MMM or individual contributors, prefering to let these things burn out, as they do, but that doesn't mean that people like baden87 should expect to use what is someone else's Forum to ride his hobby horse and get up other contributer's noses.

Endlessly demanding explanations for moderator action and starting new threads immediately the last one was frozen is way OTT.   Why should moderators have to justify themselves to his satisfaction - indeed how could it be even possible to satisfy someone like baden87 unless he gets his way?

Baden87 has, from my viewpoint, shown himself to be an arrogant, opinionated and gobby nuisance and I do hope he goes away soon.

To all who are following this thread,

I have PM'd Baden87 with an explanation to the best of my ability and as an assistant moderator I do not wish to be drawn any further into this discussion.

To prevent any further postings I am now Freezing this thread.

If you disagree with my actions please email Daniel Attwood.

Keith.
