hi all, ive just received my first ved renewal for my Bailey Approach 635 M/H and It was not for the £140 I was expecting but for £235 ! Gov website states euro 5 vehicles up to 3500 kg and reg before 31/12/2010 pay £140 so why does the same vehicle registered after this date, as mine was -1/4/16- have to pay the extra ? any thoughts

I thought that all motorhomes / campers under 3500kg had a road vehicle tax of £230 over recent years and not heard of one being only £140. As ours is classed as a PHGV it has remained at £165.

Alan

Neither have i. Mine is a Ford Transit pvc rated at 2500kg and my ved has always been £235.

...expanding on my brief note of above.

The Tax Class 36 lower rate for Euro V vehicles was offered to early adopter commercial vehicles to provide an incentive to switch early (and at the start of Euro V availability). It was made available for Euro V compliant vehicles first registered between 1 January 2009 and 31 December 2010, and the lower rate has continued for these vehicles ever since.

Motor Caravans should never have been entitled to this, since they should would have been registered in the (never reduced) Tax Class 11 PLG class.

The current rate for this is £235. As you are re-taxing from 1/4/17, there is just a chance this figure may have changed from that date as part of the tax changes being implemented on that date, so may actually be (slightly) more, but I can't find a copy of the new (V149) tax tables valid from that date anywhere.

Tax Class 36 (TC36) was originally introduced for Euro 4 light GOODS vehicles and subsequently expanded to Euro 5 equivalents. As Robinhood says, motorhomes should never have been placed in TC36, though I’m pretty sure some motorhome magazines have suggested that they could have been.

TC36 is mentioned here

https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-rate-tables/other-vehicle-tax-rates

and the rates for vehicles first registered on or after April 1 2017 are stated here

https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-rate-tables/vehicles-registered-on-or-after-1-april-2017

(The April 1 2017-onwards rates relate to vehicles with a maximum overall weight not exceeding 3500kg.)

...but these are the "standard" rates. For motorcaravans, you need the issue of the V149 tables which will give the rate for PLG (TC11) vehicles (in which, I believe, motorcaravans will continue to be taxed at both initial and renewal stages). (edited to add: subject to the oft-discussed issue of the final CoC not having a CO2 figure contained in it).

There is an embedded link to this on the page referenced by your link, but it goes to the publication from 1/4/16, whereas the one from 1/4/17 will be the one relevant in this case - and I can't find it online.

Yes, I appreciate that and - as you rightly say - there does not seem to be an on-line 2017 version of the V149 document that would specifically identify the 2017 rates for the TC11 (Private/Light Goods Vehicles) and TC10 (Private HGV) classes.

This June 2016 DVLA document

http://www.bvsf.org.uk/cms/images/PDFs/VED%20Reform%20Industry%20Brief%201%2030%20June%202016.pdf

explains the revised scheme, including how it applies to M1SP vehicles (eg. motorhomes). The following statement is made:

"Multi stage build M1SP and M1G vehicles without a CO2 emissions figure shown as part of the final type approval will continue to be taxed as PLG. Where there is a CO2 figure they will be taxed under the new scheme.”

This is much the same policy as now and (just like now, but not highlighted by the DVLA) the revised scheme will only apply to motorhomes with a MAM not exceeding 3500kg.

However, I believe that (other than the New Scheme revisions applying to ‘cars’ from 1 April 2017) the rates in the 2016 V149 document

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/508618/V149_170316.pdf

will not alter for 2017 for the other vehicle classes.

There’s a December 2016 'briefing paper' that can be downloaded from here

http://researchbriefings.parliament.uk/ResearchBriefing/Summary/SN01482#fullreport

and this includes the statement

"For standard cars—that covers 95% of all cars sold in the UK—the charge will be £140 a year. That is less than the average £166 that motorists pay today. There will be no change to VED for existing cars: no one will pay more in tax than they do today for the car they already own.”

Besides which, I’ve just renewed my (PLG) Rapido’s 12-month vehicle tax that will commence on 1 April 2017 and paid £235, the same as a year ago.

As the TC10 rate has been static for years, I can’t see that altering for 2017.
