But Macron is Centre left socialist liberal Dave.

I have faith in the French people to stop this barmy and dangerous populist frenzy in its tracks. I dont think they are as stupid as the Brits and Americans.

I thought he said he was neither left or right? ;-) .......

But he is a ex investment banker :-| .......So what are the chances of him being a loony liberal? 8-) ........

BTW if Le Pen loses......I doubt anyone could claim coming second has stopped the rise of populist movement........they've just delayed it >:-) ........

Another 5 years of mass migration and Islamist atrocities should do the trick *-) ........

You almost make that sound like a good thing Dave. :-(

At the end of the day France will vote in someone who is not going to make them worse off. The populist movement is waning in Europe. Once they see what a disaster it becomes in the US and UK it will collapse completely.

Not at all......I'm just a realist :-| ............Funny how you loony liberals seem to think the far right coming second equates to the populist vote waning? ;-) ...........

"The populist movement is waning" ... With Le Pen and Melenchon sharing around 42% of the first round vote I'd hardly say that's waning ... Frances two main parties have just been wiped and if the very beautiful Marine gets 40% in the second round then that is hardly a "waning movement" ... Your in Lala Land again Barry

Hollande has thrown his backing behind Macron , bet Macron's thrilled ... Its like Blair backing Remain ... Macron's Presidency will be the longest 5 year wait for the real deal ... A lame duck President care-taking for the lady-in-waiting ... Nice to see the EU putting its weight behind Macron to ensure its survival for a little longer

Anyone who thinks the French are not as stupid as the British or Americans must have very little understanding of the French. The French generally are as mad as a box of frogs, ( sorry, I meant amphibians with long legs).

AGD

And you base that opinion on what exactly? I have a pretty good understanding of the French and most of Western Europe having spent nearly half my life there over pretty much the last decade. Whilst the populist uprising has gained some ground in Europe I dont think they are daft enough to actually put people in power that will tear Europe apart, unlike the Brits and the Americans.

Antony. Supposedly the rise of the far right is on the crest of the wave so as good as its going to get for them yet they have failed in Holland, Austria, Italy and hopefully and probably France. If it really was a revolution with legs then they would have done better in those countries. Whilst I can agree there has been some dissatisfaction and some pockets of anti EU feeling and surge to the right, mainland Europeans do not want to see the EU go down the toilet. I suspect Brexit and to some extent Trump will seal the fate of people like Le Pen once they start to see the reality of the mess this movement has caused for the Brits and Americans.

Europe may actually become closer and more united during Brexit once the inevitable fall out occurs between us and them. Good luck to them.

Grow up ... Holland didn't fail , Wilders gained and the eventual winner had to take on some more right wing policies to win ??? ... Austria was a hair away from a far right leader ??? ... Italy has been an uprising from the left and if Le Pen gets 40% my friend that is a victory ... Can you imagine if the UK voted 40% for the BNP or National Front would you not say that is a victory ... 40% of one of Europes leading countries voting for a far right extremist party ... Your worlds over my friend ... Get used to it

Close but no cigar though Antony in mainland Europe. I never said that the Populist far right movement didnt have support just that it doesnt and never will have enough support in countries that are not as daft as the US and UK. if 40% is classed as a victory surely that means that 48% is enough to qualify for a second referendum then huh? :D

Glad to see you admitting that Le Pen and her band of little nazi monsters are no different from the BNP and British National Front though, glad we got that one out in the open. :D

Havent they? The Americans certainly have and a crackpot one at that. If our Government gets its way it looks like we will be heading further towards a far right dictatorship as well.

You have said popularism is on the wane Barry but I don't see your proof ... When you say "far right movement didn't have support just that it doesn't and never will have enough support in countries THAT ARE NOT AS DAFT AS THE US AND UK " ... That comment suggests Brexit was a far right vote and Trump is a far right President ??? Are you sure about that ... If Le Pen gets 40% of the vote come second round I presume your happy calling 40% of your beloved French "little nazi monsters" after all if they vote for her they must be the same and I suppose because I like her i'm a "little nazi monster"

"little nazi monsters" you might be right Barry about Le Pen ... Given her share of the youth vote in France they have a lot of "little nazi monsters" who could well grow in to "big nazi monsters" ... Seems she won the female vote too , winning more female votes than any other candidate beating even lame-duck Macron ... I love the French ... The real French , not those who put another countries name after the French bit ... You are either French or not

Well lets see how it pans out in the next couple of weeks. There are some pretty nasty people behind her and the same goes for Trump. I am sure the majority of French and US citizens who voted for both are neither Nazis or Monsters and that goes for you and everyone else on here of course but I think they know not what they do.

Dissatisfaction with their lives, big change is exciting, kicking "the man" or the system, fear of the migrant crisis fuelled by the media, terrorism, there are a raft of reasons people have jumped on this bandwagon but voting for extremists as history shows never ends well if they gain power. Thankfully I dont think it will happen in mainland Europe but i acknowledge there has been growing support for these people just not enough thank God.

Your world has put the "dissatisfaction" into folks lives Barry ... Its not about "kicking the man" or "fear" of this that and t'other those are just excuses you make up to sleep easy at night ... If Le Pen appeals to 40% of voters its because she speaks about a different France to the one you'd like to keep , its as simple as that ... As for the support maybe you are right this time but nothing under Macron will change immigration \ terrorism \ licking up to the EU ( who are disgracefully interfering in the French election ) will stay the same ... 5 years as we know soon comes around and next time out may well be a different story

Imagine the effect another 5 years of mass migration will have on the EU, especially once Merkel starts trying to dump all those she invited on other EU countries >:-) .......

Not to mention the increase in crime, rapes and terrorism *-) ........
