aandncaravan
I know this has been covered before but we are still seeing dry Banner Energy Bull batteries that have suffered damage through fluid loss because the owners were told at purchase time they were Maintenance free. As a result the batteries were given zero maintenance, then expired damaging the charger unit. The photo below is of two dry Banner Energy Bulls that the owner bought 2 years ago. When we topped them up to see how much fluid had been lost, they took just under 3 litres for the pair. These batteries require more maintenance than most, as demonstrated by the amount of lost fluid. Because of the amount of dangerous gas released it is extra important with these batteries that they are only installed outside the habitation area or that the venting tubes are securely attached to take the gas to the outside. I still think there is a perception that most Habitation batteries are maintenance free. May we suggest that if you have Wet Acid batteries (other than zero fluid loss Powerframe batteries) that you check the fluid levels on a regular basis? However, please do this with care as there are associated risks. As soon as you remove a battery filler Cap explosive Hydrogen gas can be released. John52
Could the fluid loss have been caused by overcharging? I have never had to top up my (Fiamm/Lucas/Lion) leisure batteries but don't have a charger unit - just a (voltage sensing) relay connecting them in parallel with the engine battery when the engine is running. tonyishuk
I was told to Check my Banner Twice a year, generally takes about a half pint of distilled water over the year. Probably because it is kept on a Cetck maintenance charger when not in use. Rgds
Curtisden
My Banner 180amp was linked up to a mains charger when in storage. It lost fluid. My new camper has a 240amp linked to a 100W solar charger, I check the level each trip and it has not lost a fluid in 12 months.
John52
I replaced my leisure batteries after 7 years because their performance was failing, but the electrolyte level was still above the plates and they had never been topped up.
