StuartO
The most shocking aspect of Theresa May's climb down for me so far was the appointment of Michael Gove as a Cabinet Minister again. It seems like no time at all since that guy showed himself to have appaling judgement as well as the morals of the selfish guttersnipe when he did the dirty on Boris, who was of course doing the dirty himself at the time for reasons of personal ambition. Nick Clegg wasn't about compromising his principles to get his period in coalition power - and now he's paid the price and serves him right too. And Arlene Foster is the woman who was defending the energy scam in Northern Ireland last year which cause Martin McGuiness to resign and bring the NI Government down wasn't she? Favoured people in NI were making a fortune out of what seemed to be an energy scam pure and simple. I suppose you can explain Theresa May's actions as pragmatic because she does need to steady the ship rather than allow another General Election (from which momentum would favour Jeremy Corbyn and get him into No 10) and I suppose you could say her notives might be sort of honourable - but hell's bells, is there no limit to the stooping she will resort to to stay in power herself, which is what it also serves to support? The UK negotiating position with the EU seems to have become completely compromised by election of a hung Parliament and we might as well have Jeremy Corbyn doing the negotiating! And of course Boris is still capable of mounting a personal campaign to end up in No 10 later this year, even if he does see the need to support Theresa for long enough to steady the ship and avoid another Election. It's all so Machiavellian - and I don't for one minute think that Labour aren't being just as bad, as they were last year with all those leadership shenanigans. I am reminded of the sleaze scandals in the Tory Party which drove me into voting for Tony Blair as the breath of fresh air - and look what a sleaze bag he turned out to be! I think I'd rather have Prince Phillip running the Country than any of this lot - and he's not exactly up the job any longer either!

With the cabinet hating each other and fighting among themselves they are not fighting her, so she gets to stay. Divide and Rule. But it doesn't bode well for the Brexit negotiations as you say :-(

StuartO
I'm quite prepared to imagine that the EU gang of offivials are mostly self-serving crooks, but I did rather hope that some of our politicians weren't.

I can't see why the "EU gang of officials" should be considered to be any more inclined to be "self-serving crooks" than "our politicians" are..? Did the likes of the "expenses scandal" etc pass you by Stuart..? (lol) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_political_scandals_in_the_United_Kingdom It'd be interesting to know what the atmosphere was like (and to hear any "exchanges") between Johnson and Gove tho' (lol)

StuartO
The cynicism is overwhelming! Are we saying that because all politicians are self-serving crooks, democracy cannot work for the benefit of the people - and shouldn't we regard most of the people as self-serving crooks too these days? What's the answer then? A benevolent dictator- how do you find one? A theocracy? Abandon the rule of law and let the toughest prevail in the struggle for domination? Aren't there some decent people and politicians?

So the DUP get more power than Labour who got 100 times as many votes.
