Lizzie
Am I right in my understanding that if you go to Norway via Denmark with your dog you need to go to the vet within 5 days (like when you are returning to the UK. But if you travel via Sweden "The exception is if you are travelling with a dog, cat or ferret directly from Sweden. If your papers are in order, you may pass through the green channel." What does directly mean here? As we are planning on going through Denmark then Sweden then Norway I thought we did not require to go to the vet. However, this doesn't seem to make sense. Has anyone done this trip with a dog?
peterjl
Hi We went through all this 3 years back so things may have changed. I can recall that the rules taking dog in from Sweden was different to taking dog in from Denmark. Sweden has a land border that animals can cross so the rules reflect this but it was far from clear. Took our dog into Sweden and the crossing via the bridge is like any other crossing in EU. Before taking her into Norway we had to get her vetted in Sweden, and passport stamped, ( just as you do when you return to UK. We were at the top of Sweden, found a vet on google, phoned, they spoke perfect English and knew what needed doing. Soooooo had her vetted and passport stamped plus made sure I had a receipt as extra evidence if needed. Then drove up the road to Norway that runs parallel with Finland to Narvik. The border post was a hut at the side of the road so we stopped and I wandered in with my papers. The official was not really interested, more focused on a couple of lorries waiting to get in, and just glanced at papers, didn't look at dog, and waved us through. I had worried about this as the rules on the web were not a model of clarity but it was all a non event. Had A great trip, away 8 weeks, but never made it to North Cape so are planning to go again via Lithuania, Estonia, Finland, probably 2019 cos next year is already filling up with other travel plans. As I said, the rules may have changed or the website may be clearer. If in doubt you can always ask a vet in Sweden. Have a great trip Peter
stvekay
Hi. We have just returned with our dog from Denmark and Sweden, and just 1 night in Norway. used ferry from Denmark to Sweden, and quite country rd into Norway, and out again. No border control or even a sign saying we had crossed border. Only check coming through Tunnel as usual. As a matter of interest used a vet in a village in Belgium, he didnt seem to know how to do the passport or why. He copied what had been done before, and when I asked him how much he said the tablet is 8 euros, and is all he was going to charge. I gave him 15 so he gave us a couple of packets of dog teeth chews. Happy end to a great trip. Hope you enjoy yours as much as we did ours. Lizzie
Thanks Peter. I guess we will easily find a vet in Sweden when we are ready to go to Norway as you did. Should be straight forward. I wouldn't risk taking him in without the right docs - too paranoid!
peterjl
Hi Lizzie That was exactly my reasoning. The potential worry wasn't worth the euros it cost at the vet. I can't remember what we were charged but it was not extortionate, I recall being content with the cost. Peter
