SCR contamination

Hi

A word of warning really..... Peugeot have seen fit on the boxer not to supply/fit a locking Ad Blue cap..

As a result some low life has added to the tank a handful of earth/debris/contaminant

As a result the EML came on the motor went into limp mode and I now require a dossing pump & injector... Peugeot's response is "why do you need a locking cap.... no ones going to steal it"

In case OF SCR there is not any involvement OF Ad- Blue. Leave this to the garage of your boxer because their is no expertise on this site as far as i understand. Keep me informed about the follow up about this contamination. FCA decided to go this way of treatment. But it can be that they have to go to ad-blueof the next euro standards. Not sure if euro standards have any effect in the uk afther the brexit and that you will return to the old BS standards.

I think you are confusing Euro 6 Fiat Ducatos, that (where motorhomes are currently concerned) do not have an SCR system involving AdBlue, with Euro 6 Peugeot Boxer and Citroen Relay/Jumper vehicles that do have an SCR/AdBlue system.

Malcolm (bruxism) has warned that the AdBlue filler-cap on Peugeot Boxers is not fitted with a locking mechanism, consequently allowing a vandal to introduce a contaminant into the AdBlue tank (as happened in Malcolm’s case) resulting in expensive damage. Lots of Boxer-based motorhomes are marketed in the UK, so Malcolm’s warning is very relevant.

SCR is not new and many forum members will be familiar with its concepts and some will have practical expertise of the system. But what’s important here is the vulnerability to vandalism of a Euro 6 Boxer’s non-lockable AdBlue filler-cap.

Some vehicles (eg. the Mercedes Sprinter) have the AdBlue filling-point under the bonnet; others will have the filling-point behind a lockable ‘flap’. I don’t know how many vehicles have an ‘exposed’ AdBlue filler-cap that is not lockable as standard, but the potential for vandalism of such an arrangement is plain.

It’s certainly possible to obtain lockable AdBlue filler-caps (see following adverts)

https://www.dieselcaps.co.uk/adbluecaps/

https://www.bisonparts.co.uk/category/adblue-fuel-caps

but these all seem to be aimed at heavy goods vehicles, and (as I understand Malcolm’s comment) Peugeot are unable to supply a lockable cap suitable for a Boxer.

It’s worth adding, perhaps, that there was a credible statement in a French motorhome magazine some while back that all new diesel-fuelled Fiat Ducatos would need to have an SCR/AdBlue system by the beginning of 2018 to comply with a revision to the acceleration-related part of the Euro 6 testing procedure. Whether that turns out to be true remains to be seen, but ‘people carrier’ versions of the Euro 6 Ducato already have an SCR system and (based on the current Ducato Owner Handbook) these have the same vulnerable-to-vandalism non-lockable AdBlue filler-cap as the Euro 6 Boxer.

These links may also be of interest, with the 1st showing a Euro 6 Boxer’s AdBlue filler-cap below the diesel-fuel filler-cap.

Thanks for the heads up as I have the same setup on my Citroen relay/boxer. What scumbags would sink this low!

Anyway just had a look at mine and because of the diameter of the filler tube It would be difficult to find a lockable cap. One possible solution may be an alloy plate that goes over the fuel filler when the cap is removed and protrudes downwards to partially cover the adblue cap and prevent turning of the adblue cap, there is about 5mm of space behind the diesel cap when locked in position so it could work, difficult to explain but a plate with a slightly larger hole goes over the diesel fuel filler and then the lockable fuel cap goes over to hold plate in position. I'm on the road at the moment but will look more into this option when I get back. Shame the flap is flimsy plastic as locking that may have been an option otherwise. A heosafe type lock could also work but unsightly and need to drill holes etc :-(
