kevandali Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 We want to buy an atlas to accompany our sat nav meanderings, which one do you lot prefer?
Steve928 Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 AA Big Road Atlas, A3 paperback, for route planning etc. AA Big Easy Read, A3 spiral bound, for navigating (sits handily on a lap). About £5 and £10 respectively. Suits our needs perfectly.
StuartO Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 We bought an A4 Michlen ring-bound atlas in France this year; I like it but the OH thinks it's too small!
spospe Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 Since 2001 we have used the Michelin 1:200,000 maps (1 inch to 3.16 miles) excellent and full of tourist type information, such as places of interest. Edit: should have said that the ones we use are the A3 size and ring bound.
yeti Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 I would go for Michelin large scale atlas, having said that we bought one from a Frenche supermarche the last time we were there visiting my daughter who was working there.bought one from a French hyper marche when visiting my daughter who worked there. It was based on IGN mapping, the nearest to our OS,it cost 14Euros and is spral bound and also included town plans and speed trap locations, Also attached are stickers to mark pages and locations.
Bulletguy Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 I know Michelin have a good reputation etc but i've always found them too fussy and cluttered. I prefer AA and where possible buy the soft cover 'foldable' of each country and a spiral bound for Europe. It's what best suits you and your vision rather than what other people buy.
Les W Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 Michelin maps give the width of the roads, not sure if the others do though.
tonyishuk Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 If you are the sort of person that pours over OS maps and can tell a church with a steeple, from a windmill by symbols, then Go Michelin ! I am ;-) else go AA . Rgds
Cattwg Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 Bulletguy - 2017-07-14 12:12 PM I know Michelin have a good reputation etc but i've always found them too fussy and cluttered. We would agree with this opinion. My wife especially dislikes the Michelin maps. We prefer the AA atlases. We buy the spiral bound version and find that they usually last about 4 or 5 years before starting to fall apart from use. Cattwg :-D
laimeduck Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 Personally I'm with Bibendum. Lots of great detail which is useful when you want to find that "out of the ordinary". Second only to OS maps in my opinion - but that is only my opinion! Others may disagree & probably will.
