I'm planning my first Europen tour from September to May and for Spain in Dec/Jan I've been looking at the benefits of using an ACSI Card or Camping Cheques. I would appreciate any feedback on either of these or advice on other options.

We did our first foreign tour to France last September and used only camping aires and free spots where we were in the company of several other vans for strength in numbers.

The 'Aires de services camping car' book was all we needed and the three weeks site fees totalled just 21 Euros.

The holiday was really good and we met lots of friendly motor homers (German and Dutch more than French or Brits) and we will do exactly the same again later this year.

I gather from others that both the 'Camper Stop Europe' from Vicarious books is very good as are the 'Reismobile Bord Atlas' and 'France Passion' although I have not yet used any of these.

On the other hand if you prefer to use only 'proper' camp sites none of the above will suffice.

Whatever you decide I expect that you will be made to feel considerably more welcome abroad with you motor home that you are in the UK.

We used camping cheques last year on our first trip with new motorhome and have now bought more and booked for 2 weeks in September - ended up in France on the Swiss border, near Geneva, last year. Bus trip to Geneva was very exciting.

This year we are planning to go to the Italian Lakes. Have booked ferry with Camping Cheques UK and ordered 10 "cheques" to go on our Gold Card. We were given an additional 5 "cheques" for booking the ferry and even with a £5 booking fee the cost was £302. It would have been cheaper but we only have 2 weeks and wanted to travel on Saturdays!

We found we didn't really need to book last year but a 'phone call doesn't hurt. We only stayed 1 or 2 nights on each site but found the majority were first rate. You can research sites on the Camping Cheque web site if you are planning your trip and we would have no hesitation in recommending the use of the cheques (£10-30 per night covers at least the 'van, 2 people and electricity so can be a real saving).

Happy motorhoming....

Hi Isdickson,

There are also Touring Cheques, they are similar to Camping Cheques. However they often use different campsites and sometimes different dates, hence giving you more flexibility.

Try www.touringcheques.co.uk.

Like others we have successfully used aires whilst touring France and Italy.

We find a mix of sites, aires and wild camping/overnight parking works well when touring for several weeks at a time.

Have a good trip. Regards Cattwg
