I also suggest that you do not swap the steering wheel for a smaller-diameter one for a while, until you can be pretty sure the power-steering retrofit is OK and that the reduced effort merits changing the wheel.

 

I recall driving an early-1990s Mercedes moving-van and finding the steering at parking speeds murderously heavy even with the big steering wheel. I was assured by the hire-company that the vehicle had power-steering, though I’ve never been wholly convinced that was true.

 

If you keep the big wheel and the power-steering fails, you’ve got a better chance of the vehicle remaining drivable: if you go for a much smaller wheel and the power-steering fails, you’ll be in big trouble.
