vindiboy
I have had Fiat vans for over 20 years, a Euromobil, an Hymer and now a Chausson all on Fiat chassis, yes I have had a few problems, clutch replacement[ in Portugal] on the Hymer, I did 100,000 in that van ,drive shaft on the Euromobil replaced in France after breakdown, oil leaking from gearbox, due to drive shaft seal. bit of rust in wheel arch and a new wheel bearing and ball joint on my Chausson, just fixed for the MOT, are you sure you are not giving in too easily>
leylandlover
My Carioca had an advisory on its first MOT for chassis corrosion!!!!! I have welded 4 patches on it.Jacking points and a hole in the O/S rear wing. The last damp readings also high 50% in places. We have been motorhoming since 1980.A 1980 Ci transit we owned is still on the road.I did a lot of welding on that one as well as a diesel engine conversion. I have welded 4 patches on it.Jacking points and a hole in the O/S rear wing. Morning On "it's" first MOT?...or the first MOT during your ownership? (and was it this advisory that prompted you to weld/patch jacking points and a hole in an inner wing?) because if all this happened after it's first ever MOT, it sounds like you've had a bit of a lemon...and I would've been having a word or two with Fiat....:-S So what age/model of Fiat are we talking of?... leylandlover
It was a 2006 Carioca 644.I have an app that lets you check MOT history on any vehicle.Had I known about this app I would not have touched it with a bargepole. We owned it for 7 years.!3000 miles when we bought it and 32.800 when we sold it.I had advisory about jacking points last year and noticed the rust hole on the O/S rear mudguard about a month ago. Brock
Being a member of the Caravan Club, it seems the caravan build quality and customer service is just as lacking. So sorry, leylandlover, I doubt you will find solace in tugger land. Motorhoming in our Hymer motorhome is increasingly wearisome with one thing after another. If it wasn't for the missus still enjoying the past time, I think I'd have surrendered. Whatever you do, I hope you have a more enjoyable experience. If its any consolation, my last three motorhomes failed their first MOT.
Tracker
With one exception I never owned a van newer than two years old and most were over four years old when I bought them. I never had any van of mine fail an MOT in many years of motorhoming. Leisure battery related issues excepted, I never had any major issues or build quality problems with any van of mine over many thousands of miles. Mind you my experience was only ever with UK made brands so what do I know. Perhaps I was just lucky, or maybe I am one of the silent majority? pepe63xnotuse
So in fairness(to Fiat?) this van is now 11 years old..and had been owned by the OP for 7 years.. (and didn't do much over 4000 per year, so probably stood a fair bit). The first couple of posts had me thinking this was a relatively new van.... (..and bit of preventative maintenance can go a long way...) OT re: Advisories. I can't recall what it was for (or indeed which vehicle it was on) but in the past, I've had an "advisory" (nothing much, 'else I would had it done straight away) but it was forgotten about and at the next service & pre-MOT fettle, this component/seal/bush/ leak(or what ever it was supposed to have been!) in this previous "advisory" didn't even get a mention!...I asked about it, and they said that "it" was fine....and this was at the same garage that I had used the previous year. So I wouldn't necessarily damn a vehicle based on an "advisory" that was written out umpteen years ago... :-S
Guest pelmetman
Regular maintenance......and regular use is the key to keeping a camper in good nick, along with sorting any issues asap rather hoping they'll go away ......... Well its worked for me for the past 27 years B-) .........
Derek Uzzell
There is an on-line application that allows a vehicle’s MOT-test history to be displayed. https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history A kit-car I used to own in the 1970s is still alive and kicking and passing its MOT tests despite now being 55 years old. For anyone interested, the registration number is 220WMA and there are advisory notice items for some of the MOT tests. You can only get results for tests done in England, Scotland or Wales since 2005.
