How far to town

While trying to decide where to use up our holidays (round about M/H shows etc) this year, my wife reminded me of our stop off a the ccc site at Leek last September. We took the scenic route from S. Scotland to the York show via the lake district / telford / Birmingham then rolled into Leek on Tuesday (pm). We thought we would just get to the site and maybe come into town the next day to stock up for the show (not knowing how far from any shops the showground would be). I did notice it was rather an uphill ( literally ) struggle to drive to the site, but a lovely little site none the less.

The next day we decided that taking a 25ft M/H in to a small(ish) town to find shops etc while not exactly foolish, it would be easier without, so we

found out that there was a bus stop right outside, with a bus due soon no problem.

We got into town within 5-10 mins, wandered about, found it was market day spent some cash, got some lunch, what more could you need?

We then went to the nearest supermarket to the site end of town which was the co-op. the plan was to get the shopping then a taxi back up the hill to the site.

Now even in the frozen wastelands of the north (LANARK) most supermarkets have a taxi rank or at least a freephone type number for customers to use but not here, unnoticed to us on the way in there are no taxis out side and no obvious numbers, so we asked at customer services but the only number they had went unanswered. We waited outside thinking one would roll in soon but no, so I walked back into town to try find the rank that surely would be near the centre, it was but it was also empty, so I went into a nearby shop the nice lady behind the counter gave me the local Y/pages in which I found 4 more local numbers, 2 didn't answer 1 couldn't tell me when a cab would be free the other could send one in 90 mins. all this at 2 in the afternoon.

Taxi companies 5, cars available nil. The next bus was due at 3.30 so no help there then.

So back to super market tell wife bad news and walk (minus wife and seven bags of shopping)back to site (all uphill) unhook electric bolt everything down ansd drive back to town for shopping (and I suppose wife).

The question for this years wandering is can I get a site near Tesco and can I get home shopping on a wap phone? or should I start towing a car behind just to go shopping.

Any body selling a smart car with extended boot space?

We too learnt that lesson many years ago and now stock up whilst on the road on the way to BUT before getting to a show!

you can get something called a 'clever end' for a smart car. It is, in effect, a 'big bum' that overhangs the end of the car and almost doubles the storage space - although, I can fit ten or more full bags of shopping in a fortwo and a similar amount in a roadster - all without compromising the passenger compartment. I believe smarts-r-us is the UK agent for the 'clever end' - as I said, not pretty, but useful.
