road pricing

Do you realise that at the proposed rate of £1.34 per mile on peak routes, a vehicle doing 30 miles per gallon will pay an extra £40.20, over and above the fuel cost (Current Average) 0f £4.10, effectively equating to £44.30 per gallon. AN INCREASE OF ONE THOUSAND PER CENT.

Even at the minor road charge of 2 pence per mile, the increase will effectively be 60pence per gallon, or 15%.

The proposals are alledgedly, to combat congestion - It will achieve this, as no-one will be able to afford to travel, EXCEPT FORIEGN VEHICLES, WHO APPARENTLY WILL BE EXEMPT

There is a petition to Downing Street at petitions.pm.gov.uk, and I would urge everyone to visit this site and sign the petition, which closes in early February. There are currently over 200,000 signatures.

Ask all your motoring friends to sign also.

It's not ill thought out at all Empress.

On the contrary it's very well thought out by Grasping Gordon and Red Ken and their non driving looney chums as yet another way to penalise the softest money pots in the UK.

Yes you've got it, it's us, the honest motorists of the UK

Unless this money raising scam is adopted by our continental cousins, what better excuse is needed to motorhome abroad, if they follow this greedy practice, I will have to get my push bike road worthy. chas

I wouldn't mind road pricing in principle, IF they abolished Road Tax & set the "price" to raise the same total nationally. At the moment, once you've paid the fixed costs of annual tax & insurance, it makes sense to use the vehicle as much as possible, as it's usually cheaper per mile than public transport (quite apart from the convenience etc). If those fixed costs were translated into costs per mile, we'd have some incentive to drive less.

BUT OF COURSE, that' not what's going to happen. We'll get stung for "road pricing" ON TOP OF annual Road Tax, as an extra way of getting money out of us.

And anyway, whatever they do I'll carry on using my camper, and doing far less damage to the environment than all those aircraft (which don't even pay tax on their fuel!).

There, that's my "rant of the week" over with, now I can be nice and positive to everyone I meet.

Travel safe!

Just an observation, but with car ownership into the around the 10 million mark, 249 thosand signatures on a petition isn't a lot!!!

Hello Basil,

There are approximately 30 million registered vehicles in the UK the majority of which are private cars. Motor Caravans represent approximately 85,000.

Take the point of your message but 249,001 (I've just signed) are better than none and remember that each car can represent two or more people who may well have a vote. Having said that several million were against Iraq and look at what happened there.

Regards,

Mike.

This plan is based upon a completely false premiss, namely that we have a choice of how we travel and when we travel. If those two conditions prevailed then it is possible that if we were obliged to pay a high premium for traveling on route A at time B we may decide to take route C at time D. The reality is that our transportation infrastructure is such that we rarely have a choice even between forms of transport let alone routes.

A principal reason for my early retirement was the gridlock that prevails on our motorways. I simply couldn't take it any longer. If there had been any viable alternative way of getting from A to B I would have taken it irrespective of the threat of road pricing - who wants to spend half their life parked up on the M6? Like many others I would be prepared to get up at some unearthly hour to miss peak traffic but five years on even those opportunities are no longer available - now every one has to do it.

So here we have another half baked plan by this government whose members rarely leave the confines of Westminster and when they do, they get aboard the Queeen's Flight - or is it Blair Force One now?

When will the penny drop: either a) we need to expand the transportation infrastructure or b) reduce the population.

Hi Mike and All,

Thanks Mike for the figures for registrations, must confess did not know the figures and that was the last I remember seeing somewhere, but that makes my comment even more pertinant. Added to your comment regards the war protest I think you know as well as I that even with half a million protesting (thats the 249 thousand doubled to account for your comment) we all know what notice will be taken!

I agree totally with what you are saying, I also in my last three years of work drove in excess of 140K miles per year a lot of which was on the M25 car park. Like you I had no choice, company car that had to be used and needing to get to meetings by 0900hrs meant leaving home before there were any buses and possibly only one train that would get me to where I had to be on time. If I had have used public transport the costs would have been astronomical as they are now, my daughter commutes into London daily and the cost is far greater than running a car for the same journey including the depreciation. Even the artificial costs added by 'Red Ken' and his crew of pirates don't come close to make it as costly.

I also agree the need to reduce the population of the country, that in my view is the main cause of all this country's woe's, perhaps we could start off by shipping out all the politicians, national and local, none of them seem to be any use to me!

Edit I also have signed the petition, but believe it was a waste of five minutes of my life!

Vernon

i have just put my mark on the petition for what good it will do

as we mortals don't have a say in this country ..the only ones who do are

mp's and foreigners ,

but like you say Vernon if they reduce the population... kick the foreigners out ..asylum seekers ,illegals ,and migrant workers,

who all seem to own cars most of which we have paid for and their housing ,food clothing ,

And sort the transportation infrastructure ,

just think what a lovely country this would be ...............

put the GREAT BACK INTO GREAT BRITON and NOT TREASURE ISLAND ,

as it seems to be for all the foreigners

rant over this doesn't get to me at all

Aah PAW don’t distress yourself so, it’s nearly dark, you’ll soon be able to go out and push some dog turd through someone’s letterbox, that’ll make you feel better.

If there's a dog turd in the street and no one has claimed it by all means go ahead and pick it up TC01, it appears to be something you would do seeing as you've suggested it. I assume you've never had it done to you though otherwise you wouldn't suggest it even in jest. *-)

Just remember it's not like horse manure so don't put it on your roses. (lol)
