Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Mongolia - Anyone been here in their MH

Hi Everyone,

At the moment I am deep into the planning of a more extended trip with my wife to Central Asia. We want to drive through Greece, then into Turkey, then Armenia, Georgia then cross the Caspian Sea, into Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, then Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, then home through Russia.

We sold our old ancient Elddis Autoquest and bought a newish Globecar. And I have spent the last couple of months making us as 'Off Grid' as possible. I don't think there are many places to get hookup in these countries.

I just wondered if anyone here had done a similar trip to some or all of these countries. I have found countless blogs of French and Dutch travelers doing a tip like this in their campers but not from UK. Any advice or tips would be great from people with experience of these countries.

Do you think we are mad and should not do it. My wife has been having Russian lessons for the last year at night school in Leeds and I've been doing an intensive motor mechanics course in Wakefield. We will apply for a multiple entry Russian Business visa before leaving and all other visas we will get on the road.

Thanks Everyone, Have a great Sunday

Jamie

I met a Dutch couple in Albania one year who were enroute to Mongolia. They were driving a 4x4 with one of those tent conversions on the roof. That was the year i discovered TomTom doesn't read co-ordinates in Albania....only Garmin which was what they were using so i'm sure you've already been told about this?

Good luck with Russia. Iv'e always wanted to give it a go and last year in Estonia was just a few miles from the Russian border. I met a group of young Swiss lads returning from a trip to Murmansk and they told me something which might be useful for you to think of. When parking up overnight, park the opposite way round as though you are leaving Russia, not just starting. Apart from the mad driving which i'm sure you're aware of, watch out for roadside robbery.....but this is how Russian truckers deal with that!

The boring bit, and I suspect a bit difficult, will be insurances. Your home during your (presumably) long absence, health, and last but not least, the Globecar. I think you may need to speak to Lime Street Brokers (Google it) who, at least a couple of years ago (among a number of other fields), specialised in insuring UK registered vehicles in what were usually "no-go" areas. See also this earlier thread in which there is more detail: http://tinyurl.com/qc35mhk It starts about insurance for importing, but you should find some of the later posts more relevant to your trip. As I mentioned in that string, I haven't used them, but did at the time speak to them to understand what they could do. I imagine it won't be cheap! :-)

Expect the OP already knows about this overland club http://www.silkroute.org.uk/index.html

If not, it might be worth becoming a member and gaining additional knowledge from experienced travellers OR even joining up with a fellow member if going along his route.

I would agree, the Silk Route Motorhome Club would be my starting point. I’ve visited their site loads of times, and followed details of trips to Bejing and down the length of South America. They always had details of insurances etc which are a major concern. Best wishes.
