Dog carriers on a scooter or motorbike.

We have a 8.5 kg dog, and want to get a small scooter or similar for the van, so we can explore a bit more and take the dog (Harvey) with us. We would need a legal carrier for the back of the bike, so has anyone experienced this problem and although I have looked, I can't find anything suitable in the UK.

Having spent three weeks cycling in Holland last May, I'm pretty sure the Dutch have a product suitable. They have bike shops everywhere and sell wicker dog baskets specifically for mounting on bike carriers. Mostly smaller dogs being carried, not sure how large an 8.5Kg dog would be. What breed?

Pondering the same sort of question.

We Have taken over care of our son's Irish terrier and wondering how to accommodate her whilst cycling, and the only answer seems to be a bike dog trailer. She weighs in at 13kg and mad as a hatter.

Unfortunately we also have health issues which means that the ebikes may have to go.

Have not come to a conclusion yet !

However if anyone is interested in a pair of low mileage Freego Hawk Ebikes, fully knitted out, drop me a pm.

Rgds

This guy made his own but Ive never found anything off the shelf in the UK. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsXjsakvBQQ

Few on Ebay but not in the UK https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313.TR10.TRC0.A0.H0.Xmotorcyle+pet+carrier.TRS0&_nkw=motorcyle+pet+carrier&_sacat=0

Yes, available in the States, but not here. And the max weight limit on some is only 8 kg.

I would've thought that the carrier type, and where you mount it, has also got to depend on what sort of bike you'll be lashing it to?..and whether or not the bike is going to be ridden two-up?..

If it's only going to be a lightweight "step-thru" scooter/bike, then that'd mean it'd need to be tail mounted?..So with a 20lb dog, possibly with a pillion, to my thinking that'd make it to tail biased...

Maybe a trailer?

('should just add, I don't have a dog, but I have always ridden big bikes, so have experience of how weight/kit, loaded high up on the tail, can negatively affect handling, even on quite large-ish bikes).

It strikes me that there actually could be a market for a UK made specialist carrier for motorbike or scooter mounting!

Why would it need to be "UK made"?...just squinting on the web brings up dog carriers for bikes,

eg https://www.rockstarpuppyboutique.com/motorcycle-dog-carriers/

..but as above, most seem to be photographed mounted on large bikes...maybe there's a reason for that? (as I said, instability when on smaller scooters etc?).

If the bike is big enough to take a proper, model specific rack, then as long as any load rating(common sense) allowed, as a last resort wouldn't a modified top box be big enough?

If it wouldn't, then I'd hazard a guess that the dog would be too big/heavy to be carried on a small m'bike/scooter anyway...

I doubt if there are any laws restricting what you can do - but you could use the "Ask the Police" enquiry service to find out.

I suspect you could simply fit a rear carrier rack to the scooter (a standard motorcycling accessory) and mount a pet carrier box on to it by drilling to put bolts through the carrier rails.
