Does anyone know why the 12 noon ferry from.Cherbourg is now not running? asked Brittany Ferries, no answer. This was a popular ferry arriving back in good light to drive home. Seems odd, it does run in July/ Aug. Is it for returning families on school holidays!

If you are referring to the Portsmouth-Cherbourg route, in 2018 the “Normandie” cruise-ferry apparently left from Cherbourg on just one day (Wednesday 21 February at 23:00) before that ship transferred to the Portsmouth-Caen route.

From 22 February until 2 April there are no crossings from Cherbourg to Portsmouth. (Demand would be relatively small and easily handled by the Portsmouth-Caen and Poole-Cherbourg routes.)

On 3 April crossings from Cherbourg to Portsmouth restart using the “Normandie Express” high-speed catamaran. There is no crossing leaving Cherbourg at 12:00, though there is a 12:30 crossing that commences on 25 May and continues to be offered until 31 August. The final 2018 Cherbourg-Portsmouth crossing by “Normandie Express” is scheduled for 10 September.

Except for the odd occasion only the “Normandie Express” is used on the Portsmouth-Cherbourg route and (because of the nature of this vessel) Brittany Ferries only operates it from May through early-September when weather/sea conditions should be reasonable. That has been Brittany Ferries’s policy for quite a few years.

Brittany Ferries operates the Poole-Cherbourg route all year round (in 2018 using the “Armorique” or “Barfleur” cruise-ferries). Depending on the day of the week, the ferry leaves Cherbourg at 18:30 or 22:15
