Silver screen material

Anybody know of a source for the material that they use to make external silver screens?

I know some people with A class vans who can't get screens made by the usual sources so would like to try making their own if the material is available.

B & Q have some quilted insulation material, which I thought may be promising. The guy I spoke to in the local B & Q said it was waterproof.

The problem I could not resolve was to get some suitable edge binding, plus of course, before the ladies read this.

As a typical fella, I'm absolutely useless with a Sewing machine. So, if I have to buy the materials then pay to get them made up I didn't think I would be saving anything.

But if you can overcome these problems it may be a solution for you.

You could try Screwfix direct but a 20 metre roll is £200 for the same stuff that Taylormade use!

Thanks Dave. I've just tried the site but can't find it. Any idea what section to try please as I don't know what it might be called. (or a URL ??)

The URL is www.screfix.com and the material is called superquilt, order code 25009-85. My earlier posting was slightly off the mark re price, its actually £225 for a for a 10 metre by 1.5 metre roll!

A slightly sideways approach ? Halfords / Argos sell a car cover for about £35 which has a slivered outer and soft inner. We have used the material for sun shades and other similar uses. It is quite resiliant and waterproof.

If you could find some suitable packing, it might do the job ?

That's an interesting idea.

I had also thought about having simple screens for use at home to stop sunlight fading and this may be a suitable material for it.

Thanks

Not suitable for silver screens, but for privacy. Tscibo were selling fly screen material with a silvered side. Made some privicy curtains (just a velcro tab) and it is nearly impossible to see in, but you can see out. Reflects the heat too.

Even if you can source the material you will need a strong binding and elastic and you could have problems sewing through the thick layers!! I know my sewing machine wouldnt cope you need an industrial machine.

Yep! got one of those, that's why we thought it might be feasible.

When we changed van lat time the screen was similar but different so wife modified it rather than pay out another £150.

We have friends who can't get screens made (the manufaturers aren't interested in one offs it seems) so we wondered if we could make them but it seems that sourcing the material isn't so easy.

On top of that, of course, is the cost of velcro etc. It was never intended to save money, just make what seems difficult to buy.

Interesting... I was also looking at making something for our A-Class Hymer, just want something to cut back the condensation, so don't think we will need as much padding/insulation as the Pre-made ones, so may be able to sew an edge our selves.

Our Hymer as an awning rail fitted above the front windscreen and above each side door/window.
