maggyd Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 Does anyone know the best place to cross to Ireland ie: the cheapest place to cross from? from experience its about 3 times more expensive than going over to France!!
Guest Frank Wilkinson Posted January 27, 2007 Posted January 27, 2007 We're crossing from Liverpool to Dublin for a few days either side of Easter. Unfortunately, when I book a ferry the price is the last thing that matters to me. The important things are convenience and comfort.I could probably have saved money by driving to Holyhead or Stranraer but Liverpool is an hour's drive from home. We've booked a fully flexible return ticket, which we can change or cancel and it's £256 for a 6mtr motorhome and two adults. This may not be much help because, to give you advice on ferries, it's always a great help to know where you live, but at least you'll have a price to compare.
Guest starspirit Posted January 27, 2007 Posted January 27, 2007 Irish Ferries Pembroke / Rosslare is often good value. You could try the CC and CCC travel services. Fish around via google for long enough and usually something decent turns up.
Clive Posted January 27, 2007 Posted January 27, 2007 Hi Margaret, I agree, the ferry is far too expensive for a MH and trailer, as you said three times the cost of going to France. It also rains a lot. However I do want to go but not at those prices. If they want to encourage tourism then they need to do something about it. I don,t fancy B&B which is a cheaper option. Regards C.
maggyd Posted January 28, 2007 Author Posted January 28, 2007 Thanks all, and Frank that isnt a bad price from Liverpool, we are in Cleveland and last time we went we went from Holyhead with car and caravan and it cost 320 approx carn,t remember exactly but Holyhead is a drag I wouldnt mind Liverpool. Did you book through the clubs? we have membership in both but were considering dropping ccc as the only site we have been to in the last couple of years is Moffat.
Guest Frank Wilkinson Posted January 28, 2007 Posted January 28, 2007 Maggyd, I just booked via P & O's website, on the evening of Christmas Day actually.
sibhyd Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 Hope your going wild camping?we live here and find there are only a handfull of sites open at this time of year. *-)
Guest starspirit Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 Hi Sib, Welcome to the madhouse! The last time we went to Ireland wild camping was possible but not that easy due largely to the number of height barriers designed to keep out what was generically termed 'tinkers'. However as we went in May we often had no choice as there were not too many sites open as the camping season seemed to start in June in Ireland. Does 'never drive through a puddle unless you can see how deep it is' still apply and do many roads still have large 'leprechauns swimming pools' every few yards! Has anything changed since 2000 please? That said it is a lovely country with lovelypeople and such a laid back way of relieving you oy your cash!
Mel E Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 We went Irish Ferries from Holyhead to Dublin last year - it was significantly cheaper than P&O and more convenient than Norfolk Line. Has anything changed since 2000? Yes, there are fewer camp sites as more and more change to static 'mobile homes' - though their lack of mobility means they are now called 'Park Homes' by some!! Onle in the south west is there a reasonable density of camp sites. Elsewhere, you will have to plan carefully, as wild camping is not that easy - height barriers everywhere as has been mentioned. Once away from Dublin, the roads have obviously not benfitted from the EU funding that went to Spain, etc. They are truly awful and maintaining an average speed in excess of 30mph is almost impossible. But it is a beautiful country, eating out is generally good, and there is lots to do and see.
seabreeze Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 Hope this will help but try going to the following website http://holidayrally.brinkster.net where there are details of holiday for motorhomes including return ferry to Larne. The agent may be able to give details of the crossings with P & O :-D
Mickt Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 The FICC rally is there in July this year and the CCC special rates for the whole of the month (lol)
Miami Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 starspirit - 2007-01-29 12:58 PM Hi Sib, Welcome to the madhouse! We have been to Ireland 3 times since 2000 and have seen amazing improvements over the period. The roads are much better (except the centre of towns) and there are a lot more sites open from April onwards. Far more supermarkets and you can now buy booze in them. We are off again in April via Irish Ferries. (Not that expensive!).Go for at least 3 weeks.
Rayjsj Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Hi, Went to Ireland in May last year and had a 'Grand' time, found enough sites to stay on, but there aren't as many as there SHOULD be, we crossed Fishguard/Rosslare (but then we would,as we live in Fishguard !). Loved Kerry and the Dingle peninsula, there were places to camp offsite in the more remote places, but try the site in Carichaveen it's great.(we camped next to a couple of MMM 'Testers' Here) Errr excuse me ,but aren't you whassisnames from MMM ? We got a book (free) from here Last year : http://www.camping-ireland.ie/facility_guide.html. that listed all the sites that are members. Good Luck ! The Site is called 'Mannix Point' without doubt the best site we stayed on during the whole holiday, a peat fire, a glass of Murphy's and a group playing Folk Music....who cares about the rain ? :D
nippysweety Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Hi Seabreeze, Have you or anyone you know been on a trip with this agent before? I feel I know the name. The trip sounds very good value.
foxy Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 going over 5 march cost us £75. 00 return with Stenna. Holyhead to Dun laoghaire. Foxy ps. used tesco vouchers
nippysweety Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 Hello Mickt, The FICC is there, but have you seen the posting by Seabreeze? The rally is before the FICC, and it is going to Glenarm taking in the Highland Games and is excellent value for money.
nippysweety Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 Hello Seabreeze, I think I have found out who the agent is. It is Mick McCristall the chairman of the Scottish group of the Motorcaravan club. Going on what I have read in the magazines and word of mouth, if it is him it will be worth going on.I will phone him and find out about the trip. Watch this space
Sinners Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 We went in October 2003, got a group booking of ten motorhomes (our own club and a few MCC members) through the Motorhome Ticket Club. £130.00 from Fishguard to Rosslare. Good holiday but we don't need to go again!! Too many height barriers. Poor roads. Too many stone throwing children.
Guest Frank Wilkinson Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 Really! Stone throwing children? Where were they, in the cities or villages or both?
Guest starspirit Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 Reminds me of a site we pulled onto in Central Scotland many years ago and we saw several boys standing on the roof of the toilet block seeing who could pee the furthest! We decided not to stay! Been to Ireland twice and combined 'off site' and camp site overnighting with never any bother whatsoever. One very nice site owner even opened his gates and let us stay overnight for free when we arrived as he had not yet officially opened for the season.
lizken Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 Just booked Stranraer to Belfast for July at £154 return for 12 foot motorhome and £200 return for Honda CRV and 16foot zaravan Booked with Stena Line via Caravan and Camping Club Regards Kern
carebear Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 rogerangie - 2007-02-04 9:59 PM Been there, seen it , never again. Hi Rogerangie, Know of a Roger and Angela did you travel Swansea / Cork ??? (lol)
cassie the cat Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 Hello everyone, This rally that is going to Ireland, and being run by Mick McCristall. I have been on rallies that have been run by him and they are EXCELLENT. I can say the time and effort he and his team put into it you will not be dissappointed and it is value for money. If you are looking for somewhere to go for New Year he is your man. There is nowhere in the U.K. that can match his new years at Kelso in the Scottish Borders. The only thing is you might need to be a member of the MOTORCARAVANNERS CLUB, he is the Chairman in Scotland.
maggyd Posted February 5, 2007 Author Posted February 5, 2007 lizken - 2007-02-04 6:43 PM Just booked Stranraer to Belfast for July at £154 return for 12 foot motorhome and £200 return for Honda CRV and 16foot zaravan Booked with Stena Line via Caravan and Camping Club Regards K ern Last time we went to Ireland was in a cottage which was cheaper than it cost us in 1997 which Im sure if my memory serves me right was £320 for citreon zantia plus 21ft caravan, so it sounds much better with a motorhome. regards maggyd
