Propane Again

Does anyone have any experience of gas supplies in Norway or maybe Sweden please.

On the assumption that nothing Calor supply will fit their local bottles can I assume that there will be a suitable reasonably priced local alternative and adaptor to fit my post 2004 bulkhead regulator?

I suppose Camping Gaz is one thought but it is generally blooming expensive, although I do already have an adaptor and a 907 bottle that I can take with me.

Perhaps diesel heating isn't so bad after all?

Fit a big bulk Propane tank and have both enough gas to last and also the cabability to re-fill at the pumps. (Locations are published.)

OK Clive - but is it really cost effective I wonder?

Hi Richard, Russell on MHF worked this out a while ago, if I remember rightly the payback was quite a few years. It was more for convenience than any savings.

We have it in mind to change the van this year or next so the cost and convenience of a fixed tank might well not be worth the effort.

Oh well as we're hoping for about 5 weeks the 2 Calor bottles should last as they usuually last about 15 to 20 camping days and nights.

An alternative option would be to fit one or two Gaslow refillable cylinders. These have the advantage that you can take them with you when you change your van. The gas with which you refill them is largely propane. I've had these installed in my Timberland Freedom and have been very pleased.

I looked at Gaslow and the cost seemed to me to outweigh the benefits given the long period it would take just to break even.

I have heard anecdotal evidence that many UK autogas stations are reluctant to let you fill a gaslow bottle - unless that scenario has changed?

Hi starspirit,

We have a Gaslow 11kg in conjunction with a 6kg Calor, total cost was £130 with a manual changeover valve new governor (our old one was due for change anyway) and filling point. We have refilled around eight or nine times now in the just under three years we have had them, both in the UK and abroad and there has never been a problem refilling anywhere, as far as the filling station is concerned there is no difference between us filling and an LPG car filling.

We have saved not far from the cost of the installation in this time and we can transfer them if ever we were to change the van, so over their 15 year life before exchange we would hope to gain a lot more than our money back.

Another possibility id the new BP lightweight cylinders, in Feb MMM.

Says they are available in Norway and they operate at 30bar.

Two areas to consider are the height and diameter of the cylinder for your Gas Locker. Bigger in both dimensions than the Calor bottles.

The other point MMM does not seem to clarify, is if they are Propane or Butane. (or mix ?)

Fundermental flaw in the article to me, or did I miss something?
