Bazza454 Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 We always carry a small camera in the 'van just in case we are involved in an "incident". For info - Maplins currently have a "special offer" Mini Digital Colour Camera with CD Driver and USB reduced from £99.97 to £11.97- Seems incredible value. Apparantly it's available until the 20th of Feb, or while stocks last. http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=98912&TabID=1&source=1&doy=7m2 If this link doesn't take you there, click on their special offer page.
Dave Newell Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 Hi Bazza, there are much better deals around than that one. A qucik search on 7 day shop found this http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=&products_id=101698 a 5.1 Megapixel Fuji camera with 3X optical zoom for just £66 inc VAT! There's probably better than that around too. D.
fjmike Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 OK Dave you can take your foot out of your mouth now as Bazzas link was to a camera costing £11.97. This is a bit cheaper than £66 :-D :-D :-D
Dave Newell Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 Oops, that'll learn me to read postings properly before I jump in. sorry Bazza. although i have to say i'd rather pay the £66 for a fuji 5.1 MP camera than £12 for a puny 0.3 MP job. Well done Bazza. D.
Bazza454 Posted February 7, 2007 Author Posted February 7, 2007 Hi Dave, You're right, there are some fabulous deals around at the moment for cameras, it seems that as fast as the specs go higher, the prices become lower. My point with this particular one is that for under £12 (less than a couple of pints down here) you could throw it in the glove compartment and use it for emergencies etc. Clearly it's not designed for taking family portraits. Hi Ralph, Camera phones are fine unless it's a Motorola like mine when it's virtually impossible to download and edit photos, Regards.
Dave Newell Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 you're spot on Bazza. do you really pay more than £6 for a pint? 8-) D.
fred grant Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 oi makes me own. just a few pence a pint. but include me labour and it probably dus cost nearer £6 a glass. oill bring some to peterburgh and hand some round - but dont plan on driving til about wednesday. fred
Guest Frank Wilkinson Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 Sorry Bazza, but this Maplin's camera would be a total waste of time for the job that is presumably intended. It has less then a third of a megapixel, which is absolutely primitive. It would actually be almost reasonable for a close-up portrait of one person but for a longer shot where you need to resolve greater detail it would be totally useless. And this of course is why we would wish to carry one in our glovebox, for recording an accident or some kind of damage. The pricing of this camera is a cynical exercise in marketing - sell it in one store for 28 days at a grossly inflated price and then you can legally advertise a reduction. It was never worth more than £20 to start with. The price of a product is totally unimportant if it cannot do what it's supposed to do and Dave Newell's is the best advice, spend a still modest amount and get something that will do the job!In case anyone is interested, I know little about motorhomes (but I'm learning) but as for cameras:I own a small chain of seven really specialist camera shops. National president of my trade association for three years and ten on the council and over forty years in the business.I only tell you all this so that you may realise that there is at least one subject where I know what I'm talking about!
icelander Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 Surely a non digital accident camera is better proof in court anyway because then you can not be accused of altering those tyre skid marks?
tonyishuk Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 Sods law states that the battery will be flat whenever the camera is about to be used ! Now where is my 127 film ( shows my age) for the box brownie ( confirms my age ) 8-)
Guest Frank Wilkinson Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 If you really feel more secure carrying a camera in your car or 'van, and it's actually a really good idea, there is no better bet than a good quality single-use film camera.Buy a good one by Kodak or another top maker, make sure that it has a flash and it will last four four or five years (ignore the date, you've a year or so latitude on that). You'll always have a camera to record damages or accidents, the quality is surprisingly good and if it's stolen you're talking about £8.00!This advice also applies to pictures on beaches or in pools. You can buy a fully waterproof single-use model for a little more and avoid damaging your expensive proper camera.
icelander Posted February 9, 2007 Posted February 9, 2007 Thanks Frank. Perhaps I better change from that cheapo Tesco one then to a Kodak.
trishandtez Posted February 17, 2007 Posted February 17, 2007 bazza'a quote Camera phones are fine unless it's a Motorola like mine when it's virtually impossible to download and edit photos. Hi bazza mines a motorola and I use bluetooth to download and then a program alrady on my PC to edit them, so it is possible as long as you have bluetooth on your phone of course!!! I had an older mnotorola and I used to email them to myself until i upgraded my phone!! Tricia
