cruiser
Hi Team, We'll be heading over from Dublin to Cherbourg for three weeks in September, our fourth French trip. We've previously enjoyed Normandy, Brittany and the Loire Valley. This time, we've decided to extend our driving distance, with Bruges as a 'final' destination. I'm sure the question has been asked before, so apologies if that's the case....but we'd welcome suggestions as to interesting route choices and convenient aires, both ways. We'd prefer taking our time to get there and back, avoiding tiring over-long daily drives. All suggestions appreciated...the Forum has been a great help on our previous French adventures! On a slightly different matter, aimed more at Irish readers....we usually travel Irish Ferries from Rosslare, over-nighting in the ferry port having driven up from West Cork. This year, we're having to depart from Dublin (Thanks, Irisih Ferries!) and have no idea if and where we can over-night near the port. Once again, tips welcome. Thanks in advance, as always
Brians dad
Bruges is lovely, but very touristy at all times. Aire is very expensive and noisy, but there is a campsite a bit further out. You could try Ghent instead - still lots of lovely old buildings, canals etc but populated more by students than tourists. Excellent campsite on the outskirts, with a bus every 15 minutes into town. If you have done Normandy and Brittany already, there is not much to see in northern France unless you are interested in first world war sites. Scenery gets more interesting in the Ardennes - Bastoigne in Belgium might be a good starting point, it has a good aire. You can also go into Luxembourg, where there are some excellent sites - Clairvaux, Diekirch and Troisvierges are some of our favourites in walking distance to towns. Only 4 hours drive to Bruges / Ghent via Brussels ring road. Cannot help you on parking at Dublin port - we have always driven straight in and out, never used the parking space by the terminal - our cousin in Howth has a very good driveway! cruiser
Thanks for the replies. I think, on this trip, Ghent is as far as we'd want to drive. Any thoughts on interesting stop-off points on the journey from Cherbourg?
