bootlucy
Hi all, has anyone any recommendations for sites on the Isle of skye?, and would anyone recommend touring the island in a 6.6 metre motorhome?
teccer1234
not sure about sites on Skye but we went about this time of the year a few years ago and the biggest problem was the midges, don't even think about going out at night you will be absolutly covered in them
InaPickle
The midges aren’t a problem if you use Avon Skin So Soft dry oil. The armed forces have used it for years as a jungle mosquito repellent (honestly)! We were told about it years ago and have used it ever since, it worked in Scotland with the midges and we use it now in Spain and do not get touched by mosquitos. Mickt
Went last year, road are narrow with lots of traffic, always stopping in passing places would not go again
Billggski
You'll get as many midge repellent recipes as you can handle, some work for different people but Deet is the proper stuff, I've used it in the Amazon rainforest! But it's nasty stuff. The issue on Skye is the number of visitors on a small island. We were nearly boxed in at this time of year by badly parked cars. The Scots' schools break up earlier than in England, so check with the tourist board or direct with campsites.
pottypam
As previously said, the midges can be a problem and the Island is very busy during the summer. If you want to go this year, leave it until Autumn. There are several campsites, including a C&CC site and a couple of C&MHC CLs. Advance booking is recommended. There are also a few wild camping places. We have toured in a 7.5m MH with no problems. Some of the roads are narrow, with passing places but none are very difficult. This site lists the sites https://www.isleofskye.com/accommodation/camp-sites Our favourite is at Dunvegan.
stevec176
Was on Skye about 3 weeks ago, stayed at the Lochside Caravan Site, a CS. Limited amenities but woke in the morning over looking the Loch and watching seals swimming and playing, what more could you want. We drove around in a 7.4mtr van and had no problems, just don't be in a rush. There is motorhome parking in Portree, just on your right as you enter, near the harbour. The midges were only a problem at the camp site in the evening, but there again I'm the one they pick on in a crowd.
