Guest bil h
The CC book says from A64 onto A19 then 'at Mecca Bingo' etc etc. Not knowing any names means totaly nothing. My Sat Nav (Navman iCN 630) tells me onto the A19 (OK) then it does a loop round and crosses back over the A19 towards the site. Presumably due to one way traffic or other restrictions. Does this sound OK ? Or are the CC directions sufficient and I turn off the Sat Nav (These navigators are OK but can send you down difficult alley ways !! Guest bil h
Ref my last. We have a 987M. not the largest and not towing and I'm capable of wiggly bits ? The book also says the A64 but we will be approaching from the A19 first of all so is there any need to go around the City to reach the A64 because my navigator puts me back onto the A19 close to Rowntree. Terrytraveller
Hi Bil, When using the satnav, I always browse the route before setting off. I don't know your particular satnav, but I am fairly sure you will have the ability to browse the route, and make detours from the recommended route your satnav has decided for you using drag & drop or block perhaps. There has been recent discussion on the media about satnav sending people through small villages, and other roads unsuitable for the type of vehicle driven. Most satnavs will give fast, slow routes etc, avoiding major roads, toll roads, country lanes etc, using these options will allow the satnav to make adjustments to the route, but browsing is a must, just like you might do with a paper map. I find it an absolute boon in France, making a journey from Belguim to the French Atlantic coast using non toll motorways, cutting across major city ring roads and never making a wrong turn - wonderful! twooks
first question - where are you coming in from? The route they are giving you is actually the easiest one to follow [believe it or not] and unless you know York well I would stick with them even if you're coming from the north. The A64 is the southern bit of the ring road, go with that until you get to the A19, follow that through Fulford towards York. You are now on the eastern bank of the Ouse, and Rowntrees Park is on the west bank. Simply stick in the inside lane of the A19 and try to ignore the locals and other tourists - you are aiming for the Ouse bridge - go across the bridge keeping left because the caravan park signs will have you turning sharp left to take you down to the river bank. The inner ring road continues on rightish, I think there may be traffic lights near that junction. When you get to the bank turn right. I've looked on mappy and it looks as though you can drive straight onto Terrys Ave, but you can't it actually goes under the bridge. I think you want to turn onto Clementthorpe Street. Once there, don't forget to go for your bacon butties, out of the back door to the main road shops. have fun and don't forget your water wings :-> :-> B-)
twooks
bil h - 2007-02-18 3:54 PM Presumably due to one way traffic or other restrictions. the restriction in question is the River Ouse (lol) (lol) B-)
Mel B
Unless you have a really good reason for going through York, don't! We know it very well and especially all the short cuts etc (my husband hails from York) but for the uninitiated it can be a bit hairy so I'd suggest sticking to the CC route. There's a very good Chippy on the main road!!! :->
empress
We found the directions in the CC book reasonably easy to follow - and we are not the most clued up of voyagers so you should be OK. Just ask the co-driver to keep his or her eyes open! Good luck. Empress
Bazza454
Agree entirely with Empress, forget the sat nav and follow the directions in the CC handbook, very easy to follow and accurate.
Guest bil h
Yes thanks, I've seen where to go now, without actual place names like Designer Outlet junction on the navigator its often not too clear, and the A19 went both ways too, but assuming when you're at the point it would be obvious, also the book says bridges (two) I only spotted one originaly but see now that the river divides almost at the crossing point making two bridges. And of course you cannot read the CC signs whilst sitting in the chair in Sussex. But by keeping to the left as the book says and bearing left where there's a fork in the road I got there easily (in my chair here) Thats the best of this machine the NAVMAN iCN 630 you can do it all from the chair before you start I prefer to do this then remember when I get there. So the answer is follow the book. (this is for June by the way)
twooks
That other bridge, which you may not be aware of to be honest, crosses the River Foss, the Caravan Site is not that far down river to the junction of the Foss and Ouse. When you are there, for a different way to walk in to York, turn right when you come out of the site, walk downriver to the Millennium Bridge and back on the East bank - much nicer! Keith T
We went there last autumn, and not coming from the direction which the route semed to be indicated in the CC Handbook, I plotted it on a Map (a paper opne, would you beleive) with a little help from Autoroute Express programme on the computer. Evenutally we picked up on the ring-road, and found the site signposted quite well. Re the last posting, beware of the Millenium Bridge - yes its' a great walk from town, but there are (were) youths around and about that spot, and may not be particularyly safe after dark. Of all the cities we have visited, we heard more Emergency sirens than anywhere else, and in fact one of the days the body of someone (a student, I thnk) was found murdered and in the river not far from the site! Happy days!!

maggyd
Beware be very carefull !!!! the last !1 mile approx! your satnav will take you under a LOW BRIDGE . Compare the directions in CC book with SATNAV directions you will need to tweek the last bit where it tells you to bear left IGNORE and carry on till you come to a White Pub cant remember what it is called but that is where you take a left LOOK OUT FOR CAMP SITE SIGNS. We had to reverse and it is very tricky.!!
Guest bil h
Thanks to all its pretty well sorted now, the pub is the Swan where you turn left. I shall not use the satelite at all here as it will confuse everything. We're not going until July but as it gets busy then I'm booking soon. bil h

Randonneur
When we are in the motorhome we have our Satnav (Mio268+) set on Lorry not car. Sometimes it takes us a little bit further round but we don't come up against any low bridges or too narrow lanes.
