Hi everyone,

After about 5 years I have just brought a campervan,

I sold my motorhome due to moving house and not having enough room for it.

I have now brought a 2004 Fiat Trigano Tribute just to see if things work out.

my first Motorhome was only used on one site in France with my car Behind it so we could explore around the south coast.

Now I want to travel further after I have tried the UK for a month or so that I can find any niggles or problems.

I have been trying to get a driveway blow up awning at a reasonable price but they seem to be like gold dust.

Anyone got any Ideas.

I have purchased an all the aires in france and an ACSI guide do you think I will need anything else?.

I know what I need regarding the Van and I have been to france before but did not have the responsibility of booking ferry"s as I always did that in one go as I knew when I was coming back.

Just treat me as a newbe as it was a long time since my last inauguration.

What discs do I need for the emissions for France and Spain and how do I get them.

All help will be gratefully accepted.

Mike.

Aires and Campsites (if you own a satnav):

All around Europe www.campercontact.com/en and www.campingcar-infos.com (french only).

Campings: www.archiecampings.eu

France:

http://www.airecampingcar.com

http://www.camping-car.org

http://www.campingcar-infos.com

http://www.campingcar-magazine.fr

http://www.camping-france-ouvert-annee.com/

http://www.frenchaires.com

http://www.i-campingcar.fr

http://www.campingfrance.com/

http://www.lemondeducampingcar.fr

http://aires.camping-car.com/

https://campingcarpark.com/

Spain:

https://www.areasac.es/areas/info/english_614_1_ap.html

http://www.lapaca.org/ (choose your favourite language)

Sites above are reliable and cover 95% of existing areas and campsites.

Low emission zones:

France: See https://www.certificat-air.gouv.fr/en/

Spain: I am aware of some limitation in Madrid and Barcelona but I have no details. Sorry.

Highways toll:

France:

Class upgrade if you are higher than 3 meters (let say 10 feet).

Spain:

Toll Motorways == Autopista

Free Motorways == Autovia

Unless your vehicle has rear twin wheels on Autopistas motorhomes SHOULD pay like a car.

You will need TWO emergency triangles, in case of stop on the carriageway, one to be put ahead and one behind the vehicle.

Ferries:

I crossed (forth and back) the Channel three times (my fourth will be next Thurday).

Never booked in advance.

Internet booking save some bucks for sure. How many unpredictable.

Prices are usually higher during weekends, cheaper overnight.

Details of the Spanish emissions ‘badge’ system can be viewed here

https://www.distintivo-ambiental.es/en.html

https://www.green-zones.eu/en/badges/spanish-distintivo-ambiental.html

(NOTE: Apparently the Spanish Distintivo Ambiental ‘badge’ can currently only be ordered for vehicles registered in Spain - so you will not be able to obtain one for your motorhome).

.............................................................................................................................

Details of the French emissions ‘badge’ system and its scope can be viewed here

https://www.crit-air.fr/en.html

https://www.crit-air.fr/en/information-about-the-critair-vignette/french-environmental-zones-zcr/french-environmental-zones.html

Those two links are for information only. If you choose to apply for the French badge, you should do it through the official French government website via this link.

https://www.certificat-air.gouv.fr/en/

When filling in the on-line application form for the French ’sticker', if you EXACTLY follow the straightforward procedure below, you should be awarded the best possible sticker for your motorhome.

1: IRRESPECTIVE OF THE MOTOR CARAVAN’S MAXIMUM OVERALL WEIGHT, always choose the “Private cars” option for the "Vehicle category [Champ J**]” box.

2: Always choose the “No indication of the environmental category” option for the “Indication of the environmental category [Champ V.9**]” box.

3: If the motorhome’s V5C does have a CO2 (g/km) figure in its Field V.7, enter that figure in the "CO2(in g/km) [Champ V.7**]” box. Otherwise leave that box empty.

Upload a copy of the 2nd page of the motorhome’s V5C registration certificate - that’s the page with “UK Registration Certificate” in blue in the top-left corner.

If your Trigano Tribute was UK-registered in 2004, you will be awarded a sticker with a “4” on it.

(If you know you won’t be driving in any of the French controlled zones, you don’t need to apply for a sticker - it’s not compulsory to have a sticker everywhere in France.)

.............................................................................................................................

An “All the Aires Spain and Portugal” book is available if you want it. If you have the ACSI guide for France I assume that also covers Spain and Portugal. (ACSI discounts are generally offered only during the holiday low seasons, but I’m sure you are aware of that.) But, realistically, the two books you have should be enough and Max has provided plenty of on-line alternatives.

If you are going to ‘gypsy’ around Continental Europe, presumably you’ll have to decide when you are going to leave the UK, where you will be leaving from and where on the Continent you want to arrive at, and then use the appropriate provider (ferry or tunnel). If you want to remain fluid about the return trip, the obvious approach would be to just buy in the UK a single ticket out and then buy another single ticket back when you know when you’ll be returning home and the route you’ll be taking. I can’t see obtaining the ticket back to the UK presenting any real problem.

Brexit continues to hover over UK motorists travelling abroad, with implications for passports, driving licences and insurance certificates. I’m sure Boris has such issues at the forefront of his mind though and probably has an apt Latin phrase for the future of the UK - perhaps “Mea navis aëricumbens anguillis abundant.”

If you book a return trip on the tunnel, you can change the date anytime up to a year from original date. This has to be done online no later than 24 hours before booked date. We once didn’t book a return and turning up on the day cost over €300!

Hello Mike. Stating the obvious, I guess, but if you change your return trip while away, you will have to pay the difference if the revised trip falls into a more expensive bracket than the original, and you get no refund if it is a cheaper bracket.

If you shop in Tesco you can use Tesco points in part payment on the tunnel, DFDS and P&O from Dover, and on Irish Ferries.
