Lap tops on the move.

Silly question time really, but I've never used a lap top out and about. At home I use one with a netgear wireless router and usb toggle thing. My question is:- How do you connect to these other providers when out and about? As you can tell I know very little about mobile networks.

With ours we just press the button that turns on the wireless bit, and it pops up a window showing the connections, and then we just click the Connect button and thats it.
