faulty electric step

Hi Liam,

I assume that you are refering to fold out steps and not the slideout version often used on PVCs. However if it is a Thule/Omnistor unit the wiring is the same for both types.

Does the mechanism need cleaning, and lubricating.

1. You state that there is power to the fuse. To ask the obvious, is there power from the fuse?

2. Again I have to assume that the operating switch is the simpler type with separate raise and lower buttons.

Given that my assumptions are correct, behind the switch there should be four wires. A positive supply, an earth connection, and two motor wires coloured orange and purple. With both buttons released the orange and purple wires should both be connected to earth. With either wire disconnected there should be the low motor resistance between them. You could use a test lamp connected to 12V +ve for this test.

3. If there is a circuit through the motor, then with both orange and purple wires removed from the switch, the next move would be to connect !2V +ve and earth to the above wires via a 20A fuse. Reversing the connection will reverse the direction of the motor

Do take care with this test. The operation of the mechanism is quite rapid, and could amputate stray fingers.

Alan

suggest that the steps fitted to Autocruise motorhomes around 2004 may have been “Techno Step” models made by the Nuova Mapa company mentioned here

I don’t know how different these steps are from the Omnistor products, but they have also been mentioned in the past on this forum

The step on my 2005 Autocruise Starlet 2

was a Project 2000 slide out type, some of the pins/bearings were a bit weak for their job. ALWAYS remove power source before working on the step, as has been said the motor is easily powerful enough to remove fingers.

Hi Liam

I had a problem with the step on my 2005 Autocruise Sarasota, I removed the step and checked the motor all good and found the fault to be a micro switch attached to the step. There are three fitted on mine which is a double step and they are available online for around £14.

Good luck

Besides this enquiry, on 3 January 2020 Liam also asked about a mysterious switch

https://forums.outandaboutlive.co.uk/forums/Motorhomes/Motorhome-Matters/switch-in-wardrobe/54148/

As there has been no follow-up from Liam in either case and 3 January was Liam’s most recent forum logon, it’s likely that further comments on the two threads will not be productive.
