Tolls for RV's in France

Hi,

Our Talbot hi-top was charged the second rate on the scale. This seemed to be a vehicle with the top of the windsceen less than 2m from the ground, and less than 3m high.

I was interested to note that a car pulling a trailer went through at the car rate, provided the trailer was no higher than the roof of the car. Or was it 2m?

Does anyone have a list of vehicle classes? Obviously the cost is dependent on how far it is between toll booths. Just ask me what pratt drove into the cash only slot...and didn't have any cash. There are no tolls in Brittany. And the toll ticket shows what time you entered the system, and where, so they can calculate your average speed. :'(

We have taken our sub 7.5 tonne A class RV through numerous French tolls over the years and never been charged the HGV rate. Somewhere I have a tarif leaflet picked up at one of the toll booths which shows the categories.

If it's a single rear axle then on almost all toll roads you should be charged at the stndard 'camping car' rate. A tag axle though will incur a higher charge.

Toll bridges are different and do charge at a higher rate depending on weight bandings, but again well below the HGV rate.

All that said, unless you're in a hurry to get where you're going you should have no problems and no tolls on most major non-motorway roads, and see more of France while you're at it. Enjoy

Hi,

Most of what you need is here.http://www.day-tripper.net/driveautoroutes.html#AnchorAutoroutetarif Most motorhomes/camping-cars are in class 2, don't believe all the bull about height above the axle etc. the toll operators don't have time for that. However by your description of your van it will be charged either class 3 or HGV class 4. They don't have time to come out of the toll booth to check your VIN plate either.
