Bill Ord
Some weeks ago there was a request on the best time of year to make a Bay of Biscay crossing and I related my own bad experience of an 18 hour delay in storm force winds. On the the Today programme this morning it was reported that the Pride of Bilbao docked 24 hours late after being caught in a storm. I would certainly never do it again but then my luck is mostly of the bad kind in these matters. I guess the best advice on this crossing is BE LUCKY. RonB
Your right Bill, its all down to luck at this time of year. We've been caught in storms as you describe and the following year its been as calm as a millpond. On average though, over the years, it has tended towards being smooth rather than rough. However, when it is rough you certainly know it. These occasions do add to the memory bank though. We often recall one year, when we had gone through both a storm and a gale, the captain coming on the tannoy and offering everyone a free meal on P&O in compensation for the delay. Hardly anyone was fit enough to get to the resturant let alone eat!
Bill Ord
On the occasion when we were caught in the storm we were given £15 vouchers to spend in the restaurant! Hardly anyone used them. The things that really sticks in my mind were the noise in the cabin as the bow of the boat crashed into the waves and the ambulances coming onto the car deck at Portmouth to take the injured off as had happened at Bilbao also. derek500
Even more reason to stick to the 'cheaper' route via Calais/Dunkerque.
