they really have been caught with their pants down, Im just amazed its taking people so long to realise and accept that they have. Did you see Panorama last night?

They keep saying they are following the science like its some kind of get out of jail free card so they can hold their hands up and say "not our fault" but if they were following the science they would have taken action following the outcome of Cygnus and the scientific advice from last year regarding stock piling PPE for a pending pandemic.

you watch. The scientists will get the blame as will the people for not following the rules. Its why they need holding to account now and the "Science" and data made available to all politicians from every party.

Enough to cope with a national pandemic. They were warned it was coming and we are a wealthy country but they did nothing.

Barry ..not quite true, there was a national stock. There is a million NHS staff, most of who would need at least two changes of PPE per day or more. So for 1 month the stock pile would need to be at least 60 million items. Now I don’t know what volume this would be but we keep between £500 mil and £800 mil of stock in climate controlled warehouses which has a shelf life. So the stock obviously would need continual replacement. How long is a Pandemic?? How long does the stockpile last for...don’t know. It’s more a question of how quickly they can keep replacing the supplies , from countries who want it for themselves.

Your probably right to an extent but according to the panorama program rich countries do keep stock piles and the scientists were warning the government that a pandemic was coming. Those costs and figures seem small potatoes now though when we are talking of costs in the hundreds of billions. They have even lost stuff. There was supposed to be millions of gowns purchased but half of them have gone missing and the government refuses to answer where they went. The lid will come off of this soon I reckon. The biggest crime though is the time that was wasted. We knew this was likely heading our way in January and based on the warnings the previous year that was the time to start adding to the stockpiles. Instead they shrugged it off and Johnson went on TV bragging about shaking hands with coronavirus patients and taking it on the chin etc.

To be fair the advise given was not to have large stock piles of body bags or swabs.

The Pandemic they were stocking for was thought to be for a flu pandemic. Thiey weren’t expecting this amount of critical hospital admissions.

Is it not the Civil service who are at fault here?

Have other EU countries downgraded the level of Covid-19 from HCID which required the highest level of requirement legally for PPE with health workers in early March as UK did? That's the question you need to be asking. Why did UK government downgrade it? The size of country in this case is totally irrelevant.

That was for them to decide, following the warnings about the spread of Covid, following the various epidemic preparedness reports the preceding administration had commissioned at public expense, and following a detailed appraisal of existing stocks and logistics. They needed an adequate buffer to cope with forecast infection rates, and to cover supply chain delays. On present evidence, none of this was done.
