Replacing the toilet waste tank with a casette

Not the nicest of subjects but changing out the old style waste tank toilet with a portable thetford, due to the availability of emptying out points and - quite frankly - don't like the idea of all of that sloshing around underneath us. Has anyone done this themselves, or can give advice on how to do this? We've filled the tank with water and bleach overnight, flushed it out and have filled it again for a drive around the block for a final rinse, we then plan on then just covering the hole for the old toilet with the floor plate:

This will be screwed on with a bead of silicone around the edge. Sound thorough enough?

Thanks

Thetford makes several “Porta Potti” portable toilets

and hold-down kits are available for many of them.

I don’t know how closely a 565’s ‘plate’ would fit to the floor, but even if there were a significant gap, it should be a simple matter to cover it over with a pece of plastic and sealant. I can’t see a need to add a vent to the redundant underfloor tank - just leave its drain-valve slightly open.

I don’t think you’ve ever identified your vehicle, except to say it is 30 years old. I’m guessing that it was made in Italy as fixed toilet-waste tanks tended to be quite common for Italian-built motorhomes, but it might help to know your motorhome’s make and model.

Profile updated with motorhome details.

Yeah, that's what I was planning to do. Got one of those porta pottis and that plate - it seems sturdy, would've thought with screws and some silicon it would cover the hole quite nicely.

Took it out for a drive earlier with the tank full of bleach and water after last nights bleach rinse, and continued rinsing it out with just water till it was clear from chemicals and "debris" :$ . Hopefully clean enough now so I don't have to ever think about it again.

Not sure how tempted I am to pay someone to take it off and cover the hole, or would it suffice as is?

Thanks for providing details identifying your motorhome.

I wasn’t suggesting that you seal the toilet-waste tank from beneath the floor or remove the tank. Just that - if the hold-down plate for a Porta Potti 565 did not fit flush against the floor (which I suspect is the case) - it might be simpler to cover the hole in the floor’s top surface with a slightly larger piece of thin plastic (or corrosion-proof metal) that is sealed to the floor’s surface and than screw the hold-down plate to the floor without needing to use sealant.
