French far right take a battering

The French far-right lost almost half their local representation yesterday, falling from 1,438 seats on 463 municipalities to 840 seats on 258 municipalities

A great victory that hides a general tumble. On Sunday, June 28, the National Rally welcomed its conquest of the city of Perpignan in the second round of municipal elections.

But elsewhere in France, Marine Le Pen's party is seeing its number of municipal councillors plummet. In 2014, the RN had 1,438 seats in 463 municipalities. Six years later, they won only 840 seats in 258 municipalities.

The thing is that the FN largely attract protest votes. The Socialists are seen as inept, the Conservatives as corrupt and the French are sick of Macron and his New-Liebour style party. Even his own MPs are jumping ship and finding berths elsewhere. So who is left; The FN or the Greens and the latter are thought to be the safest option for local government.

Come the national elections in 2 years time the situation will be different and the Green's new found majorities will have peed off the electorate with their crazy schemes. The Conservatives will still be seen as bent. Macron and his toupee will be history. The Socialists will still be seen as inept, but not as much by then simply because there are few options left. So, the former colleagues of Hollande who switched to Le Petit Emperor and back again will go up against Le Pen and I wouldn't like to call it.

The Greens are against intensive farming methods. The farmers aren't going to like having their irrigation quotas cut and the bans on insecticides widened. Shop keepers, cafe and bar owners and hoteliers won't like the increased controls on traffic entering cities. Motorists won't like that either. In 2 years time the Greens will have worn out their welcome IMO.

The Greens don't do deals or alter policies to curry favour. The Greens simply cannot understand why other people don't get it and will carry on doing what they believe in no matter what the pre-election polls predict. They will interfere with the livestock farmers methods and make things difficult for dairy and poultry farmers. Then they will get kicked out - hopefully.
