Pick up newmotorhome yipee.

Got phonecall yesterday to pick up my new motorhome a week come Friday. Been ordered since October and has been delivered on time. What should I expect from dealer as in showing me how everything works right through to how much fuel should be in the tank. Cannot wait but just want to make sure everything runs smoothly.

If you are new to this caper they should fully explain everything from electric hook up, filling and emptying water and waste tanks, how the loo operates, how the inside battery and mains electrics work, how the beds make up, how the gas system operates (make sure you get at least one gas bottle and pigtail) (they will tell you what a pigtail is too).

If you can take some bedding, basics like kettle and knife and spoon and some simple food and hot drink with you and spend the night close to the dealer, or even on his premises, so that you can go back in the morning with any snags - and if there are no snags you will indeed be a happy and fortunate (and unusual) little bunny.

Tell the dealer that you will be spending the night in the van just to ensure he fully explains how it all works - especially the heating and kettle boiling.

Good luck and welcome to the fold.

Well? come on then, put us out of our misery what is it?

W2G is picking up his new van on the 24th I think it is a Fiat/Peugeot based Bessecar

Mine is being collected on the 26th a New Ford Based EuraMobil Profila 660HB

Any one else expecting a new arrival?

Hi Elaine

Sounds basic but don't forget to make sure they show you the vehicle operations as well as the accomodation side.

If you don't it won't matter about the Beds, Gas, Water, Heating, Cooking, etc., as you may not be going anywhere to use them.

The motorhome is a Ford based Hymer 642 coachbuilt.

Terry that list is quite extensive. Do you still have to do those checks with a brand new vehicle?

I agree it is a good idea to spend the night nearby to dealer ( Hymer UK, Preston) would they rectify any problems if i took it back the next day or would i have to book it in. Can anybody recommend a site nearby.

Do you think the salesman might not take offence to following him round with a camcorder. If i was in his position i would not feel comfotable, good idea though.

As far as being shown the operations on the vehicle side my husband drives the same ford transit for his business.

Thanks everyone for your comments, every little bit helps. Roll on Friday

Salesmen only ever take offence AFTER they've got your money!

Seriously though, remember YOU'RE the customer - it's his job to please you, not the other way round.

But if you feel a bit shy about the camcorder bit, you can always say "so we don't forget what you've told us, and start pestering you with unnecessary questions later!"

That should appeal to him, as (however committed he is to after-care) once you've left he wants to concentrate his charm on the next punter!

Allow yourself plenty of time, and enjoythe day!

Hi Elaine,

I advise, do as many checks as you can, you might think them mundane such as opening and closing windows to see if the mechanism is okay and nothing falls off. Its a job to remember what to check next in your excitement, so tick off the list as you do it, items you didn't check at the time you can check ASAP later.

A new van I bought from Brownhills was handed over with 52 faults (fifty-two), from shower pipework missing from underneath the MH to 10 plastic finishing caps missing (counted as one fault) from the screw heads in the bathroom and bad leisure battery (had been left discharged for too long)

Regards Terry

Hi Elaine, I note you are collecting on a Friday, if you are stopping over on the Friday night make sure there will be some body who can help with any faults at work on the Saturday morning. It may be better to arrange collection on the Thursday so any faults found can be looked at on a normal working day ie Friday

Regards Tim

Is it the front wheel drive 130 bhp 2.2 or the rear wheel drive 2.4?

well done! mine is the new 2.2

Handovers are usually done by a 'handover specialist' whose sole job is handing over vans rather than by a salesman whose product knowledge is usually very limited, to say the least, and should where necessary include a short familiarisation drive in his company. If it is not offered ask for it.

I doubt he would be offended by being videoed as it should be important to him that you are taking his advice seriously. That said the best way to learn is to do it so maybe when he has shown you what to do you can then do it.

If you are still there in the morning with a list of faults - and I will be amazed if there are none - they might find it easier to fix the problems on the spot rather than have you disrupt the calm of their selling area - if you get my drift.

Yes, it is far better to do so than not.

Cynic that I am, I'd say you'll only get the next day treatment if you just leave the 'van with them, and explain you'll complete the purchase when theyv'e fixed the faults!  However, you'll have to be reasonable - one missing screw wouldn't generally warrant so severa a reaction.

Can anybody recommend a site nearby. Do you think the salesman might not take offence to following him round with a camcorder. If i was in his position i would not feel comfotable, good idea though.

Without trying to be smart, it is for the salesman to make you confortable, and not vice versa.  He's a big boy, he'll just have to put up with it!

Thanks everyone for your comments, we have now been offered Thursday pickup so were going to go with that after reading some posts.

Going to spend the night down there again after reading your posts.

The camcorder is fully charged, i just hope the salesman is a big hunk for future reference :$ .

Judgemental the van is a 2.2 130bhp front wheel drive the same as yours.

What is the warranty you get with the base vehicle and the habitational part of motorhome, we forgot to ask when ordering the vehicle.

Might sound daft but make sure you know where all the light switches are! It took us ages to find the light switch in the shower room we we had our Rapido ... it was under the upper cupboard and the last place we thought to look!

Same goes for all the other control switches, catches etc.

Take a nice big writing pad and pens and make a list of what you are told so that you don't have to try to remember it all.

Most of all - enjoy!

You will probably also need the big pad to write a list of all the things that you don't understand so that they can be explained.

I hope you don't need the big pad to list all the snags as well!

Oh yes - take a torch too!

Docted thanks but I would prefer a sight. Probably being fussy but my first night in the new motorhome I would like it to be a bit more special if you know what I mean. But somewhere not to far from Hymer Uk so I can return there if I do encounter any problems.

when i pick my new van up i am going to spend a good few hours with it, have my pad in hand, give them the list of the problems and leave the van with them for a few more days so they can sort out the problems. I will have a print out sheet of all the things to check that i got of Brian earlier this year and tick off as i go along. I have waited 4-5 months for the van so a few extra days won't hurt. Oh, and i will expect a full tank of fuel. Good luck to all who are picking up your new van, i hope you all enjoy your travels

Like you Mark I have pen and paper ready but hope not to be noting much down. I also printed out the link Terrytraveller mentioned in his post earlier although it will take some time to go through it all I am prepared to do it. Is it the norm to expect a full tank of fuel or are us motorhome lovers just a picky bunch???????

If you don't ask and keep a serious expression on your face whilst so doing they are probably unlikely to offer?

The more freebies they say yes to the better and when they stop saying yes what have you lost?

However this is all best done BEFORE signing for the van because they tend, understandably, to be less generous after you have signed.

My EuraMobil Profila 660HB has arrived at Belgium dealer at last! :-D

it is 6 weeks late, higher spec models are currently 4-5 months late! *-)

So this week they are fitting habitation a/c, reversing sensors and moving the fog lamp and preparing camper - and all being well....

I will fly from London city airport to Brussels next Monday to pick it up :->
