sax
Hello Geoff, I would love to go to Silverstone, but costs put me off a little. I know Silverstone is a circuit in different ownership from the Dr Palmer led group but I am certain that the circuit has a site of sorts within it. Check all the websites, you may have to extend your stay to avoid what this year will be monstrous queues. The bonus is obtaining the full experience of a near unique event. We have a new hope now. Instead, I decided this year to buy a season ticket to my local circuit, Snetterton, at £99. Wonderful value and a site right behind the Tyrell Bar and Restaurant. I look back to the days when I paid for all year at £10 or less. I was there in the bar when racing was held up on the day when it was announced over the tannoy that Jim Clark had died at Hockenheim. Whatever you do, I am sure, especially this year, you will have a great time. Sorry I cannot be more helpful. Regards, Mike
Bazza454
Geoff Bell - 2007-03-21 11:43 PM Planning to take the MH to Silverstone for the Grand Prix weekend, 7/8th July, Anyone doing this or done it before, any suggestions for sites within a bike ride of the circuit. Advise welcome. Hi Geoff,Nearest site is opposite the main entrance, (link attached).Be aware though, it's very basic, very noisy and a nightmare if it rains.http://www.silverstone-camping.co.uk/The other alternative is to find a site around Northampton, Billing Aquadrome is one I know, there is then a shuttle from Northampton to the circuit. Leah
Why? You get a better, warmer, cheaper, drier view watching on TV - and if it gets boring you can switch off ;-) go for a cycle ride and stop in a quiet Pub. Stopping at Billing isn't a good option - it's too far and will take ages to get to the Circuit by cycle. Stopping at Billing is OK the rest of the year as it's central for other places. There is a CC near Syresham which is only 4 miles away. There is Whittlebury Hall where you might be able to park up [www.]. The grounds back onto the Circuit. If you contact me via PM I will fish out details of the site near us ;-) [Dave King] or the one in the village, but haven't them to hand right now. Most sites get booked up well in advance - it is noisy++ - roads do get busy etc. etc. etc...
Geoff Bell
Thanks for all the info folks, I remember that year when they ran the Grand prix earlier in the year as an experiment, and it chucked it down. It took hours to evacuate the car parks and i would never do that again. Even now in the good weather, whilst it has improved considerably it is still a nightmare. thats why this year i thought I'd take the MH and wait for everyone to leave. I can put up with the noise especially if Hamilton gets his first win. I too can remember the days when a club meeting was less than a tenner and have spent many a day at Brands, Lydden,Snetterton, Mallory, Croft and Thruxton supporting the Mini Se7ens and Miglias, had a go myself for a few years, until i had to buy a house. The two don't go together, sorry I'm rambling on off topic, SHUT UP JACK.
Geoff Bell
Thats nothing Mic from Helleeeeeeeee, My Great grandfathers cousin, once removed had a daughter who had twins and one of them grew up and married a bloke who had a brother who made the Castrol sticker that was nearly going to be stuck on Jackie Stewarts pit bike. sax
Hello Geoff, If you can spare the time, try and get into the circuit and enjoy the whole atmosphere and experience. If you are retired and it rains with the consequence of being stuck, just stay there and enjoy a clubby meeting the following weekend. If you really must get away, there will be scores of 4 X 4 drivers around to pull you out ( all trying to obtain a contribution to help them pay their new Road Tax when it comes into force ). Find out now, you might even be too late. As a break from stage rallying activity I once had bash at circuit racing. Unfortunately a stage car with a change to near slicks from SP44s is not the right vehicle. I frightened myself silly and like an idiot, did not stop the activities in time, like yourself, and blew, on reflection, the chance of a nice new bungalow that I could have had for less than than £2000. BUT I still have the memories! This reply should have been on 'Chatterbox' and I shall now depart. Have fun at Silverstone. I shall think of you. Sorry for going off your thread but refreshing to find a like minded Castrol R nutter. Mike
Leah
as an experiment (lol) I like that - if only >:-( !!!! It was brought forwards to appease a certain person ........ who was told in no uncertain terms just what our fields would be like if it was typical April weather. But that person did not listen. It was all to do with him wanting to remove the BGP and take it to Europe so everyone was jumping around trying to please said person 8o| The by-pass was rushed through for the same reasons: the BGP would be moved into mainland Europe because the approach roads were suppposedly not good enough to get traffic into the Circuit fast enough. Then when it had been built the BGP was cut - less events during the weekends so people hung out in the village causing damage, littering ........ I t hink there is a balance these days apart from the fireworks all through the night from various camp sites. So long as the event goes ahead in the drier (?) months it goes quite smoothly. The By-pass certainly helps with traffic flow but I could write a book about how the locals are 'banned' from the A43 >:-)
sax
Hello Leah, I can never forgive the money grabbing little man for trying to take our GP away from us. I fully realise that for you locals it can be a frustating weekend ( whenever it is ). He used the early season fiasco to get his money spinning personal circus into Europe. As for camping after a meeting and keeping out of the way until one can leave at leisure without queues I thoroughly recommend it. You can enjoy a fabululous night with excellent company in the bar after the meeting and everyone has gone. Over here at Snetterton one thinks of so many of the unlucky young USAAF bomber crews who sacrificed themselves on our behalf and never made it back to their home base. Then one remembers lovely characters who are no longer with us that showed us their skills on the track. All of them I knew and have shared convivial evenings with them in the old club bar.Amongst them were Jim Clarke, Graham Hill, James Hunt, Ayrton Senna and in saloons, Gerry Marshall and Tony Lanfrachi and within rallying, the great Roger Clarke. To me, it is a weird experience. The other advantage is the amazing amount of wildlife which reappears so soon after everyone has gone. I have been there when fireworks, BBQ's live music etc has been laid on and I love it equally to the evenings of memories. Sorry, my comments should be elsewhere, Mike
