StuartO Posted November 10, 2020 Posted November 10, 2020 The Labour Government in Wales has announced today that to ensure a level playing field for next years school leavers, they will be graded on the basis of teacher assesments instead of examinations. This means the universities will still be able toput bus on seats and collect student fees from new undergraduates but those who will be leaving school to enter employment will have only teachers' assesments to persuade employers they are worth hiring. I can't see employers relying much on Teacher's Assessments, so I would anticipate that next years school leavers will be at risk of becoming something of a qualificationsless lost generation. I can't see this makes any moore sense than banning supermarkets from selling non-essential stuff "in fairness" to small shops which had to close during the recent two-week lockdown. I appreciate that some children will be disadvantaged because of disruption to schooling (and perhaps poor parenting) and so might under perform. But it seems to me a levelling down way of tryng to impose fairness which will, in practice, prove to be counter-productive, especially for the children who will have been willing and able to prepare themselves for exams.
jumpstart Posted November 10, 2020 Posted November 10, 2020 Aren't on line University courses just assessment's.
StuartO Posted November 10, 2020 Author Posted November 10, 2020 jumpstart - 2020-11-10 12:59 PM Aren't on line University courses just assessment's. The dumb-down, worthless "university" courses which Tony Blair started the encouragement of lots of children to aspire are certainly likely to be conducted with the minimum of academic effort.
jumpstart Posted November 10, 2020 Posted November 10, 2020 Even in house University courses are assessed there aren't any exams.
Bulletguy Posted November 10, 2020 Posted November 10, 2020 StuartO - 2020-11-10 12:25 PM ....but those who will be leaving school to enter employment will have only teachers' assesments to persuade employers they are worth hiring. I can't see employers relying much on Teacher's Assessments.... Must admit i've always gone along with this idea. I don't know why but many, in particular teachers(!!) of which three of my friends are, see it as wildly radical and unworkable. I don't. Bin yearly exams altogether and assess each pupils performance on their term work and attendance. So whilst the pressure of 'exam time' is relieved, there's an incentive to work well regularly and turn up for school.....no more bobbing off or fooling around in the class room. Ok to qualify for university i accept the necessity of standard exam procedure, but not for schooling. To be honest, the impression i get from my teacher friends, albeit they're retired, is regular assessment of pupils would be too much work....dishing out exam papers is easier!
jumpstart Posted November 10, 2020 Posted November 10, 2020 Sitting exams is outdated , unnecessary and can be misleading.
StuartO Posted November 10, 2020 Author Posted November 10, 2020 jumpstart - 2020-11-10 3:31 PM Sitting exams is outdated , unnecessary and can be misleading. The purpose of exams (for school leavers or graduates seeking employment, which they almost all do eventually) is to provide whatever employers want to use for purposes of judging aptitude for employment. In 2021 there is likely to be relatively high unemployment and so appealing to employers for the limited numbers of vacancies will require applicants to have something to show what they are capable of. I doubt that qualifications based on Teachers' Assesments (considered "fair" by the Labour Welsh Government) will cut the mustard with employers at all. If my child was leaving school and looking for an apprenticship in Summer 2021 I'd be encouraging them to take some A Level exams somewhere - if necessary by travelling to England to sit them.
jumpstart Posted November 10, 2020 Posted November 10, 2020 Degrees which many companies desire are assessed anyway. Its not beyond the wit of the teaching profession to assess students instead of physically having exams.
Guest pelmetman Posted November 10, 2020 Posted November 10, 2020 I count not being educated as a blessing ;-) ........ As I doubt my life would have been so interesting if I had left school as a fully qualified Mr Average :D .......
Birdbrain Posted November 10, 2020 Posted November 10, 2020 In our modern world where no one should be judged or go without surely everyone should just get the same result with no fails as that can hurt feelings and begin a lifetime of failure and then we will all be to blame ... Well mainly the Tories will be to blame somehow
