You could in theory (I think) do a month or two in Europe, say France, Germany and Italy then go into Croatia for a month or two then have your last month of the Schengen 90 days in Europe slowly travelling home. This was one option I toyed with for a long summer trip but it would be a bit naff in Winter. I dont think Croatia is good for wilding or aires though.

Yes you could, but you'd have to get your passport stamped at whichever border you crossed into Croatia, and again when re-entering Schengen from Croatia. It was 2008 when we went, so the border will have changed since, but I wouldn't put too much money on being able to find the right person with the right stamp before I'd made sure they are properly geared up! That is maybe a bit unfair, as they were not then in the EU, but the formalities were distinctly "light" - despite the length of the queue! :-)

The key would be to arrive in Croatia when ACSI season starts probably. Then you could maybe travel back up through Italy (perhaps Venice) in mid October and get over the Alps towards home before winter and snow sets in. Yes proof of entry and exit to Croatia would be vital.

Yes proof of entry and exit to Croatia would be vital. You'll need to check this Barry, but my understanding is that you are entitled to 90 days in Schengen in any 180 day period, with the clock commencing when you enter. The 180 days period looks back, not forward. So, if you haven't entered Schengen at all during the preceding 180 days, you start with a full 90 days allowance that you can "spend" over as many bites as you wish, but you must remember that both the day you enter and the day you leave count as "Schengen days". If you are then able to spend 90 consecutive days in Croatia as a visitor (possible, but until Croatia goes into Schengen, as far as I know, they make their own rules on that), you can split your Schengen time along the route both going and returning to suit your own preferences. So when you enter and leave Schengen from/to UK, your passport will be date stamped or (once into 2022) recorded electronically on ETIAS , and checked again when you finally leave Schengen, and if the Croat Immigration Officers haven't correctly recorded your non-Schengen time, there will be liable to be a barney at the (presumably) French border as you could look as though you've spent 180 consecutive days in Schengen in lieu of 90!

Yes so as said proof of entry is vital as well as proof of returning to Schengen I guess. I suppose in time we will find out what the score is. Even if you have to pull up at the border post and demand a stamp you would have to have one.
